Abstract

This thesis was written to explore the possibilities of expression in creative writing through the analysis of other stories. The authors personal writing style was developed in the creation of the six short stories that comprise this thesis. Adultery, injustice, abortion and fear were used as topics for these short stories because of the authors familiarity with these topics, either through direct or vicarious experience.

The works of two authors, James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway, were analyzed to guide the author in his choice of theme and writing technique. The theme of revelation or enlightenment was inspired by James Joyces stories. This idea was used as an overall theme for the thesis. All the short stories were written to portray a sudden realization in the lives of the characters. The minimalist techniques of dialogue and description were inspired by the stories Hills like White Elephants and A Clean, Well-Lit Place by Ernest Hemingway. This technique was used to give the stories a brisk pace and an energetic tone.

The authors wish is that the stories in this thesis will provide lessons for its readers. By giving them new ideas on life, the readers will hopefully be challenged to examine their own perspectives and change them for the better if deemed necessary.

I'll never tell my college teachers that ...

29 December 2003

Some of my teachers back in college think that I can write well. These are the teachers with whom I've earned some good graces; nowadays, I turn to them for when my job applications require character references. When they ask me about my plans for the future, now that I've finished my baccalaureate studies and all, they usually assume that I'd be either a journalist, or a short story writer. I really don't have the heart to tell them that, for my livelihood, I have absolutely no intention of using the three-years worth of knowledge that I've acquired while taking my degree in AB Communication Arts. I don't want to be a writer! (^_^) I want to be a programmer!

Alas, since I had the misfortune of ending up as a writing major, I had to submit six short stories (say those three words three times really fast!) for my thesis back then. Now that I've entered the labor force (in economics, labor force means all those employed plus all those unemployed but actively looking for work), I'm at a loss as to how I can put that testament of my communication arts skills to good use. After all, how can six short stories help improve my chances of landing a good programming job? They're not that well-written to merit a Palanca (yeah, I wish), and I also can't put them on my resum, since they have absolutely nothing to do with my intended career. Needless to say, I'm not very proud of my nearly worthless thesis.

That's why this site was created. My wide and varied knowledge in web design serves no purpose unless I have material to publish, and my undergrad thesis happens to be an excellent source of content for a website. By writing an online version of my thesis, I can hit two birds in one stone. This site showcases both my valuable experience in website creation, as well as my honed skills in plagiarizing ... uh... I meant, writing short stories. Hopefully, from reading my short stories, my readers will find some valuable insights on life (insights which I personally have never unearthed, even though I've read these stories about a million times).

Have a nice day.
