About Bill Melson (Billiem)
Bill Melson is a geologist, writer and educatior. His
professional background is in geology and his interests include some aspects
of the environment. He holds an AB in geology from Johns Hopkins and a PhD
from Princeton University. His recent research focuses on the eruptions
of Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica.
His home stomping grounds are the
Central Appalachians, especially the Blue Ridge and Valley and Ridge
Provinces. He is curator emeritus in the (following link includes publications) Department of Mineral Sciences
at the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. His new book came out in March, 2004: "Geology Explained: Virginia's Fort Valley and Massanutten Mountains". His most
recent popular article is entitled "Global Synergies" in the
Smithsonian-National Geographic book "Forces of Change: A New View of
Nature" (published in
May, 2000).
