THE POWER RANGERS
Games are an essential component to the learning process in my classes. Whether it is one of the time-honored classics like "Who Wants To Be a Pointenaire?" and "Jeopardy", or the new wave of classroom gaming like "Don't Be An Idiomatic" or "Sign Wars", games in Mr. Hurst's class are a necessity. In order to play these games, however, you need two very important components. The first is a slick, fun-loving game show host (Mr. Hurst) and the second is a group of teams to play the games. This is where the concept of learning teams in the classroom comes in. At the beginning of the year, students are placed into groups of about five students each based on aptitude, and are instructed to create a team name. From this point forward, everything in the class is done via the learning teams. There are reading circles, group activities, presentations and a number of other activities that are all based on the team concept. When a team does well on something, they not only get individual points, but also team points which are displayed on a board in the room. Assuming the student comes to class with some frequency, they can check the board in the room. If a student is transferred to say, Siberia, how can that student check on their team's score? At long last, we have an answer for that question. Starting July 15th, the standings will be updated once a week, right here. So without further hesitation: |
