The following items contain links to files and webpages that will be of interest over the course of the semester. Some describe actual documents that we will be using in class, and others contain information that will help you succeed in my class.

-Teams were created by the end of the first week. Check out how your team did each day right here

-READING LOGS are due in the English 9 class. Reading logs were discussed in class the first week, and a template for future assignments was also handed out. A reading log consists of five quotes from whatever a student is reading, and a personal reaction to those quotes. If you have misplaced the template, you can download a Microsoft Word copy (that you can use to type on) of it right here or a PDF copy of it right here

-Most weeks there will be a sheet handed out that will deal with READING COMPREHENSION. The sheets will generally contain ten questions that correlate to the ten areas of the WASL that the class focuses on, and will be based on whatever reading assignment the class is working on that week. The questions will be handed out on Monday and will be due on the following Friday.

-We will be discussing the CORNELL NOTES system of taking notes in class. If you would like to get a preview of what we will be talking about, check out a great website on the topic right here. The handout that was given to the students can be found right here. The students will be using CORNELL NOTES (actually a modified version to be used in class that we will refer to as CLASS NOTES) as a means to summarize weekly episodes of television shows that will be viewed in class. The shows are from the series Amazing Stories, and will be viewed without sound (only subtitles). This will help to improve  reading fluency, speed, and comprehesion. The sections and due dates are as follows:

-We will be using THINKING MAPS to clarify some of the topics that we will be discussing in class. Thinking maps are graphic representations that help to organize a person's thoughts. Think of the prewriti,ng stage in an essay, and you may get a better representation of thinking maps. Or, feel free to check this link to a website that describes all of the maps that we will be using. The assignments will be every other Wednesday, alternating with the CORNELL NOTES and their due dates will be as follows:

You would need to download the RealPlayer if you do not already have it, and you can do so at that site or at the following link to Real.com.

-We will also discuss a method of group reading called RECIPROCAL TEACHING. If you would like more information on the process, you can check out a wonderful website right here

-We will also discuss the NOVEL NOTES system of taking notes in class. If you would like to get a review of what we will be talking about, check out the template (without illustrations) right here

-We will also discuss a method of group reading called JIGSAW READING. If you would like more information on the process, you can check out a wonderful website right here

-We will eventually be working with SHAKESPERIAN SONNETS. The students will be composing first a sonnet to summarize Act II (due Wednesday), and second, a sonnet to summarize their own lives (due Friday). A link that describes sonnets can be found right here. -We will also be doing a number of activities in the class that will focus on graphic organizers or thinking maps. A website that gives a wealth of information on the topic and covers each of the maps that we will be using can be found right here .

-For a full explanation of what LITERATURE CIRCLES are, download the complete package right here

-Another item that will be worked on in class will be the INTEREST INVENTORY. This document allows me to get the "low down" on all of my students and it can be downloaded right here

-One of the strategies that we will be using in this class is the SOCRATIC SEMINAR. I will distribute copies of both a sheet describing the seminars, and an observation sheet that will be graded. If you have misplaced those copies, you can download them right here and here

-Additionally, there is a reflection sheet that may be used for the Socratic Seminars and that can be found right here

-In between major class novels, we will be doing individual BOOK REPORTs for books read in class. We are scheduled to begin working on these the first week of November. Being that these will be taking the place of READING LOGS and READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS, these assignments will be worth a great deal of points. There will be three options for books to be read; students desiring a "C" or "D" in the class will do one book, "B" students will be doing two, and "A" students will be doing all three. After reading the book, the student is to complete a BOOK REPORT on the book. The format for the book report can be found by clicking on the link.
