The Chorus

The Bel Canto Chorus evolved from the choir of the Sudbury Philharmonic Society when it dissolved in 1975.  It is a community choir of dedicated amateurs from the Region of Sudbury who enjoy learning and performing choral music.

During its many successful seasons, the Bel Canto Chorus has been conducted by several well-known Sudbury musicians, including Donald Weir, Douglas Webb, Malcolm Weshsler, Robert Hall, Susan Marrier, Brad Richmond, and David Matthies, all of whom have brought their special talents to the group.  The current conductor, Marion Harvey, has been conducting the Bel Canto Chorus since 1994.

In Sudbury, the chorus regularly presents a Christmas and a Spring concert as well as performing in other centres.  Its programmes have included works by composers such as Bach, Brahms, Dvorak, Fauré, Handel, Honegger, and Willan.  It has performed in a variety of languages - English, French, German, Latin, Hebrew, and Portuguese - providing and interesting and challenging experience for everyone.  Long classical compositions, ethnic folk songs, sacred and secular music combine to provide a variety of music in the concert programme.

The choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. starting in September and continuing to May.  Each member pays a fee to help cover the cost of music and concert expenses.

The Bel Canto Chorus is a registered non-profit organization
