Do Nothing This was the approach favoured by our Local Authority, North Somerset until a sharp rise in levels of Nitrogen Dioxide between 1999 and 2001 forced them to take notice. Despite their attempts to 'explain away' the problems by pointing to inaccuracies in their measuring equipment, it remains a fact that Banwell suffers from the worst air quality of any town or village in the whole of North Somerset. As a result of the pollution, our local General Practice prescribes medication for pulmonary conditions such as asthma and emphysema in parts of our tiny rural village at rates that are between two and three times the national average! Not surprisingly, North Somerset's transport policy has been officially described as 'poor' by the Government Office for the South West.
