Date: 13/05/07 Woodbank Park was the scene once again of the Inter-Sqn Athletics competition, where a depleted 55 put on an extremely good show. The junior boys came 6th, and the senior boys, and junior girls, each represented by one cadet, both ran in at 17th place - higher than many squadrons entering more cadets! The determination shown by the attendees was outstanding. Date: 28/04/07 55 celebrated its 65th birthday in style at the Acton Court Hotel with a Dining-in night involving past and present members of the RAF. Guest of honour was Sqn Ldr Mullen, a former cadet of 55, and now known as "Mr Puma" in the helicopter world. The evening was a great success, and a chance to reflect on the past, and the way forward for 55 in the foreseeable future. Date: 22/04/07 Wing Training Day, held this year at Wilmslow High, was the scene of triumph and learning for 55 once again. 55 came an overall 6th, recording high places in Media Relations (3rd), Aero Medelling (5th), Aircraft Recce (5th), Volleyball (8th) and Drill (13th). Date: 17/03/07 The shooting team took part in the annual wing Shooting Competition, this year held at 174 (Manchester) Squadron. The team, consisting of Sgt Stu Tyrer, Sgt Pete Matthews, Cpl Ed Heaton and Cpl Josh Lewis did extremely well, coming in at an excellent 3rd. Cpl Josh Lewis was in fact the best shot in the entire wing! Date: 05/03/07 55 took part in the annual inter-sqn 5-a-side football competition. This years team captain, CWO Tim Nelson was very pleased with the teams efforts, the juniors came 13, and the seniors 11th, both out of 25. Date: 22/02/07 The Squadron Warrant Officer, WO John Walker retired as a uniformed member of staff from the ATC, after an astonishing 15 years. John, who says "the best bit for me has definitely been seeing the cadets mature and develop into positions of responsibility," has taken over the roll of Chairman of the Committee. At the same parade 55 held its annual presentation evening, this years Best Cadet was Cdt Rick Wills. Date: 04/02/07 On the 4th February, 10 cadets from 55 took part in a nationwide celebration of the foundation of the Air Training Corps. (The ATC was founded on 5th February, 1941). Cadets from 55 took part in a major parade, from Manchester Town Hall to Manchester Cathedral, along with hundreds of others from EC&SM Wing and East Lancs Wing. This year's standard Bearer was Sgt Pete Matthews Date: 21/1/07 On Sunday 21 January 55's New Year got off to a fantastic start when the girls teamed up with 202 (Winsford) Squadron for the Hockey competition. 55 faced tough opposition but came through in the end to win the final game 4-0 against 1196 (Bredbury Romily & Marple). The team played fantastically, but special credit should go to Cpl Maura Nelson, who scored a hat-trick against 1196. Date: 04/1/07 On the 4th January, Flt Lt John Moran stepped down as OC 55 Sqn, to become the Adjutant. In his place Flt Lt Steve Johnson took over as OC, coming from 1804 (Four Heatons) Sqn. 55's training officer, Fg Off White, went to 1804 and took over as the CO there. Date: 21/12/06 On the 21st December, the squadron went tto Laser Quest in Parrswood, Didsbury to celebrate the year's fantastic achievements. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and top honours went to Cdt Alasdair Williamson, who got a total score of 1334 over two games. Date: 21/12/06 On the 21st December, a group of cadets helped AWO Walker, and CI Clarke to clear out all the old junk that had been accumulating in the building, and to get things back to a proper running order. AWO Walker said "the cadets who came down have put in an awful lot of effort today, and I'm proud of what they have achieved. It is a credit to their characters that they are willing to come to the squadron on the first day of their christmas holidays and work so hard! With them as they are, I can't wait to start the new year." Date: 2+16/11/06 On the 2nd and 16th of December, cadets from 55 took part in bag packing sessions at at the Sainsbury's in Hazel Grove and Cheadle Royal respectively. Once again the events were a success, due to the hard working cadets who raised approximately £1400 this year - another fabulous total! The sqn OC, Flt Lt Moran was "very impressed with the behavior and attitude of the cadets as they went about their work." Date: 12/11/06 On the 12th November, the squadron lead a parade thorugh Bramhall to the War Memorial to take part in a Service of Remberance for those who have been killed in the service of their Nation. Local RBL chairman, John Walker, was very impressed with the standard of the cadets, who he felt were "a fitting tribute". Cpl Jake Bryan carried the local RBL banner in Woodford church, and Sergeant Stu Tyrer did the same in Cheadle Hulme. Date: 04 & 11/11/06 12 cadets from 55 took part in two days of raising funds for the Royal British Legion by selling poppies in Bramhall village centre. As yet the total raised is unkown, but all the cadets put in a great performance in sometimes adverse weather conditions Date: 24/10/06 Many congratulations to Corporal Jake Bryan, Corporal Josh Lewis and Corporal Maura Nelson on their promotions to the rank of corporal. They can now look forward to a whole new experience at the squadron as well as a much more senior leadership role within the day-to-day running of the squadron. Date: 12/10/06 After many weeks of planning, Sergeant Pete Matthews initiated phase 1 of the recruitment drive by doing a presentation in front of 250 people at Cheadle Hulme School, along with Cdt Ollie Duggan and Cdt Josh Lewis. The event was a spectacular success, and many people commented positively on it, so welll done guys!! Sergeant Matthews, along with a hand-picked team and AWO Walker, then went on to launch phase 2 - an Open Day down at the squadron. It went brilliantly, and many, many thanks go out to all who put in the time and effort for the display. Date: 05/10/06 Congratulations to Sergeant Egan and Sergeant Tyrer on their promotions to the rank of sergeant on the 5th October. Well done and the best of luck!! Date: 19/09/06 Congratulations to Sergeant Matthews on his promotion to the rank of sergeant on the 19th September. Well done, and best of luck! Date: 10/09/06 Cpl Stu Tyrer has successfully passed his Staff part 2 interview board, and has now completed his aeronautical studies course Date: 09/09/06 12 cadets form 55 along with those of 391 (Wilmslow) and 1804 (Four Heatons) sqns went to RAF Woodvale, near Southport for their Air Experience Flights, however, the flying unfortunately had to be cancelled. Date: 02/09/06 For the first year in a long time, 55 pulled out of the inter-squadron swimming competition held at Macc Lesiure Centre. Unfortunately, due to a large number of other commitments, the squadron was unable to attend this year, but it will not happen again. Date: 11-13/08/06 Cadets under the supervision of WO Walker spent the weekend at Altcar Training Camp, near Formby, along with those from 162, and 202 Sqns, taking part in the annual Butt Marker Duties for the local Counties' rifle clubs. WO Walker, who put a huge ammount of time and effort into the planning of the event praised the cadets who worked very hard during the weekend, he thought it was "one of the best years so far." The cadets also received a huge thank-you from the rifle clubs for making the event run so smoothly. Date:16/07/06 Cpl Charlie Egan, Cpl Pete Matthews, Cpl Jonny Tipping, and FS Hayley Hall all successfully passed their Staff part 2 interview boards, very well done to them!! Date: 01/07/06 In the recent Royal British Legion Cheshire County Standard Bearing Competition, cadets from 55 came first and second in the fiercely contested youth competition. Cpl Pete Matthews snatched victory from Cpl Charlie Egan to win the Mullin Trophy - congratulations to both! Date:17/06/06 Cadets and staff from 55 along with several members of Wing Staff spent the evening at the County Hotel in Bramhall for the squadron's 'Dining-in Night'. It was a roaring success, with everyone enjoying themselves immensely; the food was fantastic, as was the quality of speeches made by the adjutant, Fg Off Mcfarland, and the Wing Commander, Wg Cmdr Morris. Date: 13/06/06 55 (Woodford & Bramhall) Sqn becomes affiliated with the Woodford Branch of the Royal British Legion in a ceremony at the RBL Branch. Chairman of the branch John Walker with OC 55 Flt Lt John Moran were both very pleased to see the ceremony go ahead - the turn out of the cadets was once again immaculate! 25/05/06 For the first time in over 5 years 55 now has two Cadet Warrant Officers on the books. CWO Jones and CWO Nelson both passed their extremely challenging interview boards and received their promotions. It is excellent to have them. Date: 25/04/06 FS Kieran Fitzsimons leaves the squadron after 3 years of unending commitment, very many thanks go to him for all his efforts and commitments during his cadet career. Date: 23/04/06 Many congratulations to all the cadets who took part in this years Wing Training Day, The squadron came an overall 8th, which is much improved on last year. The results break down as follows:
Date: 21/04/06 FS Tim Nelson becomes the first cadet in the history of the squadron to complete the incredibly challenging Junior Leaders course, which is sponsored by the RAF Regiment. The course begins in September, running over many weekends and culminates in a gruelling week-long exercise in April. After this the cadets from all of the cadet services who complete it receive their well-earned 'Maroon Lanyard'. Date: 23/02/06 The presentation evening and the AGM were a great success. Congratulations to all the cadets who received awards, for the efforts on the squadrons behalf. Date: 12/02/06 4 cadets have been selected to represent the Wing at Junior Rugby in the North Region inter-Wing competition held at RAF Linton-on-Ouse. The cadets selected are Cpl Egan, Cpl Matthews, Cdt Heaton (all for the second time) and Cdt Bryan (for his first). Cadet Nelson has also been selected to represent the Wing for inter-Wing Junior Netball, also to be held at RAF Linton-on-Ouse on the same day. Congratulations to all cadets, who will receive a Wing Blue for their efforts! Date: 5/02/06 On Sunday 5th February, 17 cadets from 55 took part in the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Air Training Corps, on the 5th February 1941. The cadets took part in a parade attended by over 700 cadets from both East Cheshire & South Manchester Wing and East Lancs Wing. The parade was from Manchester Town Hall to Manchester Cathedral via Deansgate, and by all accounts was a great success. Special congratulations should go to Cpl Egan who carried the squadron banner, and FS Hall, who did a reading during the service in the cathedral. Date: 22-23/12/05 17 cadets complete a 24hr Games Marathon to raise funds for the squadron. It was a great success, although not quite as well attended as the one in January 2005 for the Tsunami appeal organised by Cpl Matthews. However, WO Walker was very pleased at the commitment shown by those present. Date: 3&17/12/05 Cadets from 55 raise over £900 bag packing at Sainsbury's, very well done to all who turned out to support the squadron. Date:27/11/05 Cpl Egan and FS Hall represent the wing at cross-country, taking part in the North Region inter-wing competition. Date: 19/11/05 Cpl Matthews and Sgt Fitzsimons complete a Coporate Communications course, learning how to write press releases, and how to cope with emergency situations. Date: 13/11/05 Cadets from 55 parade in Bramhall as part of the Remembrance Sunday parades to remember those who have fought, and those who have died for their country. Also well done to Cpl Tyrer who carried the RBL banner in Cheadle Hulme, and Cpl Matthews who carried another RBL banner in Woodford. Well done to all those who took part, you did the sqn proud!! Date: 5&12/11/05 Cadets take part in the RBL Poppy appeal by collecting in Bramhall village centre, very well done to all those who turned out, there has been a lot of positive feedback!! Date: 23/10/05 Cadets represent the sqn at the wing cross country event. Cdt Cpl Egan comes third in his race and is chosen to represent the wing at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, HQ North Region. Date: 22/09/05 Flt Lt J. Moran officially took over 55 as OC, from Flt Lt P. Garner who has been forced to move due to work reasons. Fg Off C. Mcfarland has taken over as new adjutant. Date: 18/09/05 Cadets from 55 along with 5 other squadrons in the ECSM wing marched alongside the sea cadet corps, marine cadet corps, and veterans from the second world war to commorate those who fought for freedom during the dark days of the Battle of Britain, in the summer and early autumn of 1940. Date: 17/09/05 Cpl Matthews, Cpl Tipping, Cpl Tyrer, Cdts Bryan, Heaton & Nelson raised money for the RAFAssociation Wings Appeal in Bramhall by running a collection all morning until 1400hrs. Very well done to all who attended, your help and efforts are much appreciated by the RAFA. Date: 16/09/05 Cpl Matthews, Cpl Tipping, Cdts Bryan & Heaton represent the sqn at the wing aircraft recognition competition. The team came a very close joint 5th, only about 6 points behind 2nd place. Cpl Matthews & Cpl Tipping tied on 36 points, Cdt Bryan got 20, and Cdt Heaton 16. Very well done Date: 10-11/09/05 Cadets from 55 along with 2056 (Knutsford) Sqn helped to set up and marshal a 10Km race organised by Cancer Research UK in Tatton Park. The help was much appreciated by the other volunteers, and all the cadets thoroughly enjoyed their two days. AWO Walker, 55's SWO, was very pleased with the effort put in by the cadets who helped out. Date: 04/09/05 Car boot sale and Butt Marker Duty at Altcar, many thanks to all who attended for raising such a large amount of money at both events. Date: 03/09/05 Cadets from 55 attended the inter-sqn swimming competition at Macclesfield baths. The team had more than 12 finals from a team of 10 cadets. Especially well done to Sgt K. Fitzsimons, who won the senior breaststroke, and will go on to represent the wing. Date: 19-21/08/05 13 cadets along with those from 468 (Hyde & Hattersley) and 2056 (Knutsford) Sqns go to Altcar for Butt Marker Duty, raising cash for their squadrons. WO Walker, who was Butts Officer, was very pleased with the efforts put in by the cadets, and the firers of County of Lancashire Rifle Association were impressed with the speed of the cadets manning the targets. FS Nelson won the trophy for most compliments given by firers for the second year running. Cdt Nelson tied with Cdt Marsden (468) for second place. Date: 18/08/05 Cdt Tipping is promoted to the rank of Corporal Date: 16-17/07/05 8 Cadets along with 284 (Cheadle) Sqn, go down to RAF Fairford, for a visit to RIAT. They drove down Sat morning, camped overnight, and came back Sunday evening. They all loved the chance to see first hand the aircraft of many countries, and of course the opportunities to see the aircraft flying incredible stunts at relatively low level. These ranged from a Harrier flying backwards, to an F-16 screaming at 500 feet upside down above the runway! Not forgetting of course the amazing Red Arrows display team! Date: 10/07/05 Cadets along with WO Walker turned out in Chester for a march to celebrate the 60th anniversary of VE/VJ day, and to pay their respects to those who gave their lives for freedom during WW2. Date: 2-9/07/05 14 Cadets and 3 staff go on summer camp to RAF Northolt. They enjoyed activities such as a flight in a Merlin Helicopter, a trip on the London eye, a full days shooting at RAF Uxbridge, swimming, volleyball, drill competitions, a visit to the Imperial War Museum and HMS Belfast, as well as AEF in a Grob Tutor! So it was a very enjoyable, action packed week for all. Date: 24-26/06/05 Cadets take part in wing courses at Altcar training camp. Cadets took part in the Drill course and the ICTC course, as well as FS Jones and FS Nelson being instructors on the ICTC. Date: 22/05/05 13 cadets help out at the Race For Life, held at Tatton Park. Both the public and the event organisers thought you were very smart and that general deportment was excellent. After learning crowd control techniques with pink ribbon, the cadets went on to dish out water bottles and Race For Life Bags to the 3000 women who took part in the race. Date: 22/05/05 Cdt Robinson represents the wing at RAF Linton-on-Ouse (region HQ) in the 4x100m relay and the long jump, in which he came 4th. Extremely well done, yet again you have shown what 55 is made of! Date: 15/05/05 Very well done to those cadets who turned up to the athletics competition, you made the Sqn proud! Particularly well done to Cdts Robinson and Geldard, 100m finalists, Cdt Kenyon, 200m finalist, Cpl Matthews and FS Nelson, 400m finalists and Sgt Hall, 800m finalist. Cadets Geldard and Robinson were selected to represent the wing in their events. Date: 12/4/05 THE OC RECEIVES THE BRICK!! Flt Lt Garner received the brick for, as Cdt Cpl Egan explains, “We were on a wing training weekend at Altcar training camp, and the CO walks into our room to find the lights broken, because the switch had been smashed in. He notes this down then walks out saying lights out in 5 minutes, when we were already in the pitch black!” Date: 12/4/05 Group Captain Middleton's inspection of cadets and SQN HQ, he went away very impressed with the results. Very well done. We believe that he was very impressed with the building and especially you lot! Just to let you know that apart from a few silly mistakes, your uniforms were excellent, keep it up. A few shoes were looking better than FS Nelson's, very well done - let’s keep them that way!! Date: 9-10/4/05 Cdt Tipping completes his JNCO course, Cpls Egan, Matthews & Tyrer complete their SNCO course, Sgt Fitzsimons, FS Jones & FS Nelson complete their Basic Instructor Cadet course Date: 18-20/03/05 Cdt Tipping, Cpls Egan, Matthews & Tyrer, Sgt Fitzsimons, FSs Jones & Nelson along with WO Walker completely repaint the interior of the building in a 3 day maintenance session. Looks amazing guys, the building has changed from green to magnolia Date: 13/03/05 Juniors come 3rd in the inter-Sqn 5-a-side football, after 146 (Northwich) Sqn are disqualified. Seniors come 15th, after failing to get past the group stages. Overall the Sqn came 8th, a massive improvement on last years 11th. Well Done Date: 12/03/05 Cpl Matthews appointed 2i/c website Date: 5-6/3/05 24hr sponsored Games Marathon run at the Sqn in aid of the tsunami appeal. Cdt Robinson raised £103, overall more than £500 raised Date: 6/02/05 Cdts Heaton and Nmai along with Cpls Egan and Matthews represent the wing at rugby. Unfortunately the wing only came 5th in the region, but congratulations to Cpl Egan on scoring the wing's only try. Date: 20/01/05 Congratulations to Cpl Matthews, Sgt Hall and FS Jones on their promotions tonight Date: 07/06/04 Congratulations to the sqn aircraft knowledge team, led by Cdt Matthews, which not only won the inter-sqn competition, but went on to become the North region champions! Special congratulations to Cdt Tipping, the other team member, who was the highest scoring cadet in the region!
