Notes for Philip BARDO : From the Petition of Mary Bardo to the Corporation of Trinity House, 20th July, 1793 : The Petitioner's husband, Phillip Bardo, now a pensioner in Greenwich College, was bred to the sea, and served there in different capacities both in his Majesties and the Merchants Service, upwards of 20 years. He served out his time in the Hawk of Scarborough (Stapham Gisbro of Master - Coal Trader) and was impressed out of this into his Majesty’s Service and served therein in capacity of Captain, Coxwain, & Midshipman on board his Majesty’s Ships Cumberland and Panther, upwards of 11 years in the East Indies -- On his return he received his discharge and was afterwards Master of the Harry's Delights Trader of Rochester.

Notes for William BARDO Newspaper Report, January 13th 1849. : DEATH OF Mr BARDO. Mr William Bardo, whose death we record, Died on the 4th inst., at his residence in Rochester, at the advanced age of 80 years--- 64 of which he devoted to the service of the Royal Navy; and for the last eleven years he has fulfilled the duties of principal water bailiff of the city of Rochester.

During the year 1797 the deceased served as mate on board the Chatham yacht, which vessel he was taken from and placed on board his Majesty's ship Clyde, under the command of Rear Admiral Cunningham, during the memorable mutiny at the Nore, to conduct that ship out of the mutinous fleet into the harbour of Shearness ( the regular pilot having refused, through fear, to take charge of the ship), which he did, and after placing the ship in safety he was put into one of her boats and sent by the Rear Admiral to the ship Fiorenzo, at the Great Nore. The deceased having concocted the plan for getting the ships away from the mutiny, he succeeded in piloting the latter ship with her commander, Sir Harry Burrard Neale, to the Downs. In this service, he displayed great judgment and courage, and Rear Admiral Cunningham, in a letter, said " that the whole of Bardo's conduct was loyal and praiseworthy in the highest degree: indeed, at such a juncture of the affairs of the country, the nature and extent of the services performed by him in this instance cannot be adequately appreciated, nor correctly calculated upon."

The deceased served also on board the Lion 74, which conveyed Lord Macartney as ambassador to the Emperor of China. He was made a king's pilot, and has enjoyed a superannuation for the last six years. The deceased was very well respected by his circle of friends in Rochester and Chatham.
