Rosalynd JORDAN my cousin writes : - My father,
BERNARD EDGAR JORDAN,
was born on 13 July 1925 at 6 Invicta Road, Sheerness. He is
the youngest son of ARCHIBALD
CORRIE JORDAN and
MARGARET ANN GRIFFITHS.
At the time of his son's birth, Archibald Corrie Jordan was
a Skilled Labourer, HM Dockyard.
BERNARD EDGAR JORDAN
and FREDA RACHEL BIRCH
married on 15 July 1950. At that time, Bernard Jordan was a
Draughtsman and Freda Birch was a Clerk. Witnesses were
Mervyn Bolt (Best Man)
and Henry Sisley Birch,
Freda's father.
Bernard Jordan was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts
in 1974 and was confirmed with Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in
1980.
Bernard Jordan had 3 older brothers. (NB Note the dates
of birth for 3 of the brothers &endash; each born 6 years
apart and almost with the same birthday.)
ARCHIBALD EDMUND
JORDAN was the eldest of the 4 brothers. He was
born on 7 October 1910. Married on 16 May 1936 to
CISSIE BEATRICE
DARLING.
Archibald Edmund Jordan received the Imperial Service
Medal in January 1971 following a total of 44 years service.
This meant that 3 generations of the Jordan family had been
awarded the medal &endash; giving a total of 120 years
service between them.
Archibald and Cissie had identical twin sons,
ANTHONY JOHN JORDAN and
ANDREW CORRIE JORDAN on
30 November 1937. The twins were premature. Unfortunately,
Tony Jordan only lived until he was 29. He died on 3
February 1967. His brother, Andy, still lives in
Sheerness.
Archibald Edmund Jordan died on 5 May 1991 aged 80. He
had survived his wife by only 3 weeks. (Cissie Jordan had
died on 12 April 1991.)
ALFRED JOHN JORDAN
was the second eldest brother. He was born on 13 July 1913.
(He always described my father as his 12th birthday
present!) Married in 1953 (exact date unknown) to
EDITH BARLOW. Leonard
William Jordan (brother to the groom) was the Best Man.
Alfred and Edie did not have any children.
Alfred John Jordan died on 1 March 1977 aged only 63. His
wife, Edith, has since died (date unknown).
LEONARD WILLIAM
JORDAN was born on 12 July 1919. Married in 1949
(exact date unknown) to DORIS
VIOLET MAY WARNER (or RICHENS). They had one son,
MALCOLM WILLIAM JORDAN who was born in 1958.
Leonard Jordan had seen active service in the Navy during
the Second World War. His naval service lasted from 1938 to
1950.
Leonard Jordan died on 23 April 1993 aged 73 and was
buried in Bell Road Cemetery, Sittingbourne. His wife,
Doris, died on 13 January 1995.
My grandfather, ARCHIBALD CORRIE
JORDAN, was born on 14 December 1882, the 4th of
7 children to EDMUND EDGAR
JORDAN and CHRISTIANA
TURNER HAMLING. My grandfather was born in Hull.
(Exactly how he came to be born in Hull was a mystery until
I looked up the census return for 1881 to see who lived at
the address stated on his birth certificate. It turned out
to be his mother's parents.)
ARCHIBALD CORRIE
JORDAN married MARGARET
ANN GRIFFITHS on 29 May 1909. Witnesses were
Caroline Emily Jordan and Samuel Edmund Jordan &endash;
sister and brother to the groom. 29 May 1909 was also my
grandmother's 22nd birthday. They celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary on 29 May 1959.
Apparently, Archibald Corrie Jordan took part in walking
races in Sheerness and on a number of occasions took first
place.
Archibald Corrie Jordan was awarded the Imperial Service
Medal in 1946 following 45 years service.
Archibald Corrie Jordan died on 7 July 1962 aged 79 (I
was only 5 months old).
MARGARET ANN
GRIFFITHS was the eldest child of
GEORGE THOMAS JABBEZ
GRIFFITHS and MARGARET
KEATING. She was born on 29 May 1887.
One of the "legends" of the Griffiths family is that
Margaret was the eldest of 17 children and that there were 3
sets of twins.
She died on 30 January 1961 aged 73.
One of my grandmother's sisters told me in one of her
letters that the Griffiths family were originally from Wales
but I haven't as yet found the connection.
