DESCRIPTION OF EVENTS

Sign In & Get Colored Chip

Upon arrival, everyone should sign at the prize table. Once signed in, you will be permitted to randomly pick a colored chip from the bag at the table. This chip will be one of fourteen colors. Hold onto this chip, as it will be used to determine a prize given at the Mid-Day Meal.

Flitter/ Dragonet Wash

This event is hosted by the Weyrlings and Fire Lizard owners of the Weyr. Any other Fire Lizards are welcome to volunteer their fire lizards. The children are invited to come wash a dragonet or a fire lizard, based on age or size of the child. This event takes place during Sign Up time, and will cease fifteen minutes prior to Weyrlings On Parade.

Weyrlings Games

This event is hosted by the Weyrlings and Candidates. They will line up in specially designed clothing, dragonets bedecked with ribbons and new harnesses. From the Weyrling Barracks, they will parade around the bowl and back to the Weyrling Field, where the games are hosted. Then they will go through a mini-version of the Games. Please see the Weyrling Games page.

Drill Display

Once the Parade is completed, the Candidates and Weyrlings will demonstrate Drills. Those aerial drills that look so impressive in the air, or work so effectively in Threadfall, have to be learned. This is first taught as marching drills, which they later perform on their dragons, then in the air. These drills are practiced everyday. Our candidates and weyrlings are still too new to have been taught the normal flight patterns, but have worked on a special drill just for you. This will encompass the Double-to-the-Rear and the Mass Confusion.

Firestone Bagging Competition

Now start our competitions. After a brief explanation of what makes good firestone, everyone is invited to come try their hand at bagging firestone. The person who not only fills their bag fullest, but with the best grade of firestone, in the allotted time, wins a prize. No riders, weyrlings, or miners please.

Blindman's Bagging Competition

This is the same event you've just witnessed, but the competitors are blindfolded. Riders, Weyrlings, and miners are encouraged to join. Winner gets a prize.

Elimination Dragon Toss Event

This event is open to all non-riders and weyrlings. Everyone will be lined up facing each other in two lines. You will be required to toss a bag of stone back and forth down the line. Once it reaches the end of the line, everyone will step back and toss again down the line. You are eliminated if you drop the bag or throw the bag in such a way that the other person is hit or it falls short or goes too long over your target person. The last person in the line up wins a prize. This is split into two categories: Adults, with a fifteen pound bag, and children, with a five pound bag.

Blindman's Elimination Dragon Toss

This event is only open to riders or person's with fire lizards. No children permitted. The contestants will be blindfolded and performing the event you just witnessed. This relies on using Dragon Sight or Fire Lizard sight. The winner will receive a prize.

Elimination Dodgeball Event

This event is open to all non-riders. Weyrlings are not permitted to join. Everyone will be put into a marked out square. Several balls will be put into the playing area. Your goal is to tag out all other people and be the last one in the game. You may be tagged out in the following manner: 1) Someone touches you with a ball; 2) You trip over or drop a ball; 3) You are hit with a flying ball and do not catch it; 4) If you injure another player accidentally or otherwise. Anyone throwing a ball is NOT out if someone catches it. Last one in the game wins a prize.

Feast

This is the Mid-Day meal. Everyone with a chip is requested to sit at one of the tables matching the color of your chip. If you do not have a chip, you may receive on by signing up on the way into the Dining Cavern. The tables are lined up in the bowl.

Match The Chip

During the meal, the Harpers will be playing or singing fourteen selections. Each person will check the chip you received. If you have a chip with a second color in the center, you may come to the Harper's Platform. Give the Harpers your chip and request a song to be played and dedicate it to someone. There is one special request chip for each of the fourteen color groups. The Harpers will announce the dedication when they perform the song. These Harpers are volunteers and not permitted to play in Harper Restricted games.

Baker's Fest

During the course of the morning, several people will have baked a specialty sweet or bread. Journeymen and master Bakers are not permitted to join the baking. Rather, they will be permitted to JUDGE the baking. The winner will be announced at the end of the Feast, and a prize given to the winner.

Door Prizes

There are twenty prizes, to be drawn by different random children as chosen by the Weyrleader. Only those registered are entered. Everyone registered from child to old auntie, drudge to the Weyrwoman, has a chance to receive a prize. These prizes range in value.

Dragon Speak

After the children have finished eating, the may form a circle in the area set aside near the tables. Here they will play a round robin game. The host will whisper a series of words or a sentence to the first child, who will then whisper it to the next child, and so on. Each child will have two chances to get it repeated. They may chose, once each, Dragon or Speak. Speak means that it is repeated to them in a whisper. Dragon means that one of the volunteer Dragons will tell the child the phrase it heard. The last child will have the same two chances to hear it again, then stand up and repeat what they heard out loud to everyone. All children participating will receive prizes.

Elimination Dragon Dodgeball

This competition is similar to the other Dodgeball game played, but with two exceptions. Everyone will start on one of seven teams. And everyone will be blindfolded. There are two bags. If you have a dragon or fire lizard you will randomly choose a colored blindfold from the rainbow bag. If you do not have a dragon or fire lizard you will choose a white blindfold from the white bag. The White Team players are called Free Agents. Anyone who is not a Free Agent will be permitted to use dragon or fire lizard sight to play, in addition to their other senses; Free Agents are limited to their remaining senses. The teams work to eliminate all other teams and Free Agents, who are not required to help each other out. The last team or player on the field will receive a prize, one for each member of the team remaining.

Dragon Teachings Event

This is a childrens event in which the WeyrWoman, WeyrLeader, and other leaders in the Weyr will ask questions about dragons of the contestants. The contestants will be separated into age categories, and the questions will be harder for older categories. Each category will have one winner who will get a prize. All children who participate will receive a participation prize, beyond the winner's prizes.

Harper Tunings

This event is restricted for Harpers, but our volunteer Harpers will be hosting the event. Everyone is invited to try their hand or voice. The Harpers will play the first line of a song. Contestants will be required to sing the line. Don't stop at one line, however. The more you can sing, the further you go in this competition. After everyone playing has had a chance, anyone able to finish their song is moved into the next category. These people will be given a harder song to try. The elimination keeps going until only one person remains. This person will receive a prize befitting their skills.

Harper's Romp

This is a rather lively event for all. Everyone who wishes to play will take a seat to the center of the Dancing Square. Once everyone has sat down, the game will start. One chair will be removed. The volunteer Harpers will play or sing, and everyone will move around the chairs in an orderly fashion, in time with the music. Once the music stops, you must sit down in a chair. Naturally, one person will be left standing. This person will be eliminated, but gets to take a chair with him or her upon leaving. Then the music starts again. The eliminations keep going until only one chair and two people remain. Then, whoever is left standing when the music stops is eliminated. The last person sitting down will win a prize. If time permits, we will have two of these competitions, the first winner not permitted to play the second round.

Dragon Fly By

The Dragon Riders of Torayan Weyr will perform the famous Dragon Fly By. This consists of the Flaming Crossover recognized for its complexity Pernwide. Come watch the Weyr display their Thread fighting skills in a colorful pageantry of aerial skill.

Feast

This is the Nighttime Meal. No competitions are planned during this event, due to the Dancing Square being next.

Dancing Square

This is when the dancing begins. Any Harper will be permitted to take a turn. Anyone who wishes to try their hand at entertaining the crowd is welcome to perform.
