UPDATE ON
INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENT IN KAFUE DISTRICT
Both the old and the new sewerage
treatment plants were non operational at the time of the visit (25 - 31
January, 2004). Raw sewerage is now pumped straight into the Kafue river
(via the Kansenge stream). In addition, due to the non maintenance of the
oxidation ponds of the sewerage works, the ponds are overgrown with weed and
as a result they habour dangerous reptiles including water monitors.
On the other hand malaria causing
mosquitoes are bred in the same oxidation ponds contributing to the
incidences of malaria cases in the district. To date, the quality assurance
laboratory remains non - functional with the remaining equipment having been
removed altogether. All the above factors combine to aggravate the problem
of monitoring effluent.
The scenario at Bata Tannery (a partner
institution being monitored) was not anymore optimistic than that at the
KTSP. The change of company ownership in the last few months has not really
given value to Environmental concerns. AREZ expects new management at BATA
Tannery (now known as Kings Quality) to do more to address chromium
infiltration into the environment.
