ADVOCACY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION (ARE)

ADVOCATING FOR RESTORATION OF NATURAL ENVIRONMENT IN ZAMBIA

Do you want to know more about Advocacy for Environmental Restoration (ARE)?

ARE was established in Feb. 2001 with help from Blacksmith Institute of USA. This is an initiative to bring together individuals, institutions and other parties in a programme to protect the environment in Zambia.

ARE has since 2001 contributed to

Reduction of effluent toxicities at:

Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ), Bata Tannery, Lee Yeast and Kafue Sewerage Treatment Plant through a monitoring programme launched during 2002. Effluent samples at the said industries were collected and tested. Results from the tests were discussed with the industry personnel concerned.

ARE’s current thrust is the Kafue Dialogue

Within the overall objective of contributing to a sustainable framework of river basin management that meets the needs of water, food and environment in Zambia the following are some specific objectives;

(i) Identify the different stakeholders and their interests at national, basin and community levels

(ii) Contribute to the review of policy, legislation and institutional set-ups

(iii) Raise awareness about the KRB dialogue and other issues in the basin

(iv) Promote information sharing and contribute to the creation of a public domain database
