ADVOCATING FOR RESTORATION OF NATURAL ENVIRONMENT IN ZAMBIA

What is the Advocacy for Environmental Restoration (ARE)?

ARE was established in Feb. 2001 with help from Blacksmith Institute of USA. This is an initiative to bring together individuals, institutions and other parties in a programme to protect the environment in Zambia.

ARE is focusing on a heavily polluted industrial area on the Kafue River. The Kafue Sewage Treatment Plant, the Bata Tannery, and Lee Yeast are all industrial plants in this area that are discharging organic and toxic waste directly into the water. ARE is currently lobbying the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, the National Water and Sanitation Council, and multilateral cooperating partners to bring about a stop to the dumping.
