Main Author from Politeknik Shah Alam, Malaysia

Abstract - Semi-Auto Wheelchair (SAWc) is mobility device to provide patient independently movement for indoor and outdoor, such as moving to and placing on bed, and self-lift assistance through electrical control. Currently, patients and attendees are facing problem to be shifting from wheelchair to vehicles or bed. This research project started to know its evaluation from earlier to the present generation through literature review and market survey. Also considered to know the customer satisfaction and needs of existing product in market through questionnaires. Market survey was taken from different users and attendees for design methodologies. SAWc are driven by manual and 24 volt electrical power control. The redesign of manual wheel chair divided into two main functions: 1. Controlling lifting for up and down with electrical control, 2. the positioning control for sitting state and lying state was considered for this project, and 3. alarm or emergency system is provided to inform the attendee that there is a need of his or her presence to the patient. The design motivation of the SAWc is to reduce injury  according to lack of patient handling and will meet a customer satisfaction.

Paper 02/2016 - Digital Studio vs Conventional Studio in Teaching Architectural Design Process

Main Author from Politeknik Port Dickson, Malaysia

Abstract - Design is a complex and open process.  A designer starts the idea from an abstract form to a final idea in the form of a product to solve the design problem.   At the early design stage discussion occurs regularly between students and lecturer to improve the design quality.  The selection of a proper media for presentation is important in the design process to make sure the media selected has strong visual impact.  CAD technology gives opportunity for students to use three dimensional digital models in the design process to develop good design concept. The digital model can decrease the aspect of abstraction on a design idea.  The main objective of this study is to compare the development in the design activities between students that use digital studio and students that use conventional studio. The study had been done for four years on diploma architectural students at Port Dickson Polytechnic. All the semester six students had been selected as the sample for this study. The quasi experimental method was used to study the effect of integrating digital studio in the design process.  The research outcome showed that significant difference between digital model product (M=80.2) compared to conventional product from the aspect of creativity, t(238) = 9.198 significant.  This study shows that integration of digital studio in the learning process of design modules in polytechnic provides learning environment that ignites students to produce creative architectural design product.

Abstract - The layout and functions  of ` rumah ibu ‘ in a traditional Malay house design  which once characterize the socio-cultural community now was less inherited by the current generation. Abstract -
Most of the mosque in Malaysia have their own design in order to express better appearance imposing its aesthetically pleasing as well as a symbol of  power, splendor and to show the advancement of the country. However it was seen as a dilapidation in cost consumption in terms of building materials and mechanical system applied for the building. Islam never teaches its followers wasting money on constructing a mosque. Therefore, the study of flexibility Communal Mosque in Malaysia is seen to be enlightened on the true function of the mosque as claimed in Islam. References on construction of the previous mosque will be important references for today mosque. Functional and spiritual aspects, which should dominates the design of the mosque is not taken into consideration without thinking of the impacts that would occur if these aspects are ignored. In this research, issues to discuss are privacy, brotherhood, function, safety and design of the mosque. Methodology of the study is a literature review. The result from the study is expected to make a reassessment of the function and importance of the elements in the design of the mosque in order to develop a real character of new Muslim generation in this modern world.

Abstract -
Facebook, a social media web application, is a part of million student lives. Students use Facebook for communicating with friends and playing games. Since they use Facebook frequently and comfortably, we may exploit this entertainment-oriented site as an edutainment tool. Although there are many tools available for eLearning, Facebook seems to be one of the most effective tools because students generally respond to discussions quickly and are comfortable enough in their "space" to share their information and opinions. By using Facebook in learning, the role of students can therefore shift from only receiving knowledge to both searching and sharing their knowledge. Moreover, interactions with teachers can become more instant since teachers and students can respond quickly via Facebook. It is worthy to realize, however, that teachers cannot use Facebook as a single teaching and learning tool. Facebook still lacks features such as file submission and file sharing to support the complete learning process. This paper presents the approach and the experience in using Facebook for architectural students in Port Dickson Polytechnic for both informal and formal learning. In the formal courses, Facebook is used for discussion, sharing video and document links. We found that students actively and quickly participated in both asking and answering a lecturer’s questions. In addition, students also shared their new knowledge even after the classes have ended and grades were assigned. As a result, Facebook has an excellent potential to serve as a lifelong learning channel for lecturers and students in polytechnic.

Paper 06/2016 - Potential Concept of 'Park and Ride' at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai Kampus
Norliza Johan
Main Author from Politeknik Port Dickson, Malaysia
Abstract -
UTM is the centre point of its citizens to get to work and study, by that UTM were filled with vehicles, mainly from private vehicles and buses. Too many vehicles entering the UTM can cause traffic congestion. It also affects the car park where it is too limited in UTM. Basically vehicles have at present is overflowing and increasing every year at the request of the public and became one of the main sources to go to work or college. People are less likely to use transit vehicles such as buses and car pool to work. This is one of the main cause of traffic congestion and affect the lack of parking area in UTM. The use of too many vehicles also causes traffic congestion in certain areas in the campus. The parking problem will occur if the area was built without planning for the long term. UTM campus is also involved in this issue. For UTM citizens, parking facilities are important for those who have a vehicle. To reduce congestion and lack of parking spaces, a public method that provides ample parking and connecting with the public service was introduced and it was named the Park and Ride. Park and Ride concept gives priority to the use of buses and thus reduce the use of private vehicles.
