Spring is a wonderful time for the botanist in the Algarve. Any outing into a pine forest, on the sand dunes and to the hills north of the beaches will be richly rewarded. Great places to visit are Rocha de Pena, Fonte Benemola north of Loule and the Rio Formosa National Park at Olhao. These are all protected areas. But the roadsides are also rich in flowering plants and any short walk into the country will be rewarding.

After good rains particularly in March and April the number of flowering plants will increase.

This web site concentrates on the plants of the barrocal but many are widespread and are also found in the Western Algarve on the cliffs of Sagres, on the sand dunes and coastal Pine forests.
