A rival game to Riot Game's League of Legends, Dota2 is developed by Valve and occupies the same genre as League of Legends. Dota2's own scene rivals League of Legend's and it's not uncommon to find fans of both games bashing the rival.
A game similar to League of Legends, DOTA 2 is a MOBA(Massive Online Battle Arena), a team based game where 5 players each choose a champion to fight where the goal of the match is to destroy the opposing team's base.
To ensure their victory players must fight against the enemy units on the map, gaining gold upon killing the enemy unit that can be used to buy items that benefit the player and the team.
As Dota 2 is a MOBA it shares many characteristics with other MOBA games. It's differences however are important as it emphasizes the power of items and the heroes themselves. Compared to champions from League of Legends one could say that Dota 2 is more about how one uses all the items with active abilities when in a fight. One of the major features in Dota 2 however is the ability to "deny". This simply means that a player can kill an allied unit or building before an enemy does so in order to prevent said enemy from gaining the gold and experience the kill would have gained. Heroes in Dota 2 are also classified into two groups with 3 subdivisions within said group. Players can still choose heroes from whatever group they want however. Said 3 groups are the heroes who grow stronger through the Strength stat, Agility stat and Intelligence stat. Different items increase different stats while adding some gameplay elements not included with the hero.
The company responsible for Dota 2 is Valve Corporation commonly referred to as Valve and within the Dota 2 community jokingly referred to as Volvo. Also known for their software distribution platform, Steam, Valve has experience with large projects which can be seen when the company organizes the Internationals, Dota 2's major tournament. The company is loved by PC gamers everywhere and one of its founders, Gabe Newell, is one of PC gamings most recognized figures and an integral part of PC gaming pop culture. Valve is currently headquartered in Bellevue, Washington.
