Further statistics and choosing statistical tests

This section deals in more detail with some statistical issues discussed in part III of the book including how to standardize variables, what the binomial distribution is and guidance on choosing the appropriate statistical tests.

Appendix C: Standardizing variables as z scores

Standardizing allows us to make like-for-like comparisons between data regardless of the scale of measurement used (for example, regardless of whether we are comparing Celsius, centimetres, kilograms or age). We do this by substituting a standardized scale consisting of z scores.

Appendix D: The binomial distribution

In Chapter 9 we used the Chi Square value to calculate probabilities, but we did not discuss how these probabilities were calculated from the Chi Square value. In this appendix we will cover how these calculations are derived.

Appendix E: Choosing statistical tests

The myriad of statistical tests and minefield of conditions for their use means that many people find it difficult to remember which statistical procedure or test to use. Therefore, in this appendix we offer a guide to selecting the appropriate statistical procedure for the data that you wish to analyze.
