Issues in Research Design
There are two appendices that can be downloaded from this section of the website covering aspects of research design.  One considers longitudinal survey design while the other looks at class schemas and how they are coded.
Appendix A: Longitudinal survey designs

One weakness of cross-sectional designs is their inability to track change over time. We can ask people about events in the past but, as we know, memories may be fallible and results are likely to be unreliable. To get around this problem, we need to collect the same information over an extended time period - a 'longitudinal' survey design.

Appendix B: Coding occupational data to social class schema

Social class is one of the most common variables in sociological research. How is it coded?

This appendix covers the coding of NCDS occupational data to both government social class categories and the Cambridge scale.
