Anne Frank's Diary: First Diary

About 61 pages, 122 sides, or, since she pasted in 15 improvised pages, left about 7 pages (15 page sides) blank, and stuck two pages together, About 68 pages, 135 page sides

Dates mainly: 12 June 1942 to 5 Dec 1942. Her handwriting is sometimes hand printing, sometimes cursive. Entries in this diary were not all consecutive. She skipped pages and used them later, and added notes later as well. She dated almost all notes, too. Most, but not all, non-consecutive entries are noted here (especially those non-consecutive entries that share the same month/year). You can get the full chronology in the diary chronology. The latest entry is 22 Jan 1944, however, there are two undated entries (toward the end).
This is the most photographed diary, the one she got for her thirteenth birthday. It is a red and white checked, cloth covered autograph album with a clasp. The pages are unlined. The nearly square pages measure about 14.3 X 16.6cm (5.63" X 6.54"). Because "a number" of sheets were torn out, the original number of sheets is not clear.
The Critical Edition (p. 123) noted that she may have used a lined guide under some sheets.

School photo of Anne 1941/1942 "Gorgeous photograph, isn't it!!!!" Online, see zoomable images of a very good facsimilie of the first diary which includes this page and the page across from it (USHMM online exhibit). CE p. 176 has the photo that Anne included.
1,2 Notes dated 12 June '42 and 28 Sept '42.
(on p. 2) 28 Sept '42: notes on her appearance (There is a photo of pages two and [part of] three online, but the site was down on 10 Sept 2003)
3 14 June 1942 (first diary entry)
24 16 June 1942 (CE p. 124 has photo of this page)

25 16 June 1942, plus 1943 note (CE p. 125 has photo of this page)

28-29 "A number" of sheets were torn out after page 28. (AFBD p. 39 has a color photo of the diary opened to pages 28-9. You can see some sheets have been torn out in between.)
It's interesting to note that the first loose sheet is dated 20 June 1942, a date that these pages could have been. However, the photo of the first loose sheet shows that it is not the same size as the first diary's pages, so these missing sheets are not the first loose sheets.
Online, there are two photos of a very good facsimilie of the first diary, including pages 28-9: USHMM online exhibit. Further, the web page about the facsimilie project includes these pages (both the original diary and the facsimilie): click the image to get a huge image.
29-30 This sheet was left blank until 28 Sept '42. (See above for photos of page 29. See next for photos of page 30-31. Also, the first three photos on these pages are seen in the CE, p. 190.)
31 28 Sept 1942. She pasted in a letter from her father (dated 12 May 1939). It is in an envelope, which she pasted his photo on. (Online, there is a zoomable image of a very good facsimilie of the first diary, including pages 30-31: USHMM online exhibit. Offline, AFBD p. 42 has a color photo of the diary opened to pages 30-1. [The fourth photo, mentioned above, is also missing here.])

32 28 Sept '42.
33 28 Sept 1942 (Perhaps she put Jacque's letter on this page. She writes, "This is [Jacque's letter]," she writes a little more, but not as much as she usually wrote on a page.)
34 28 Sept 1942: comments about her earlier entries.
35 Pasted in a birth announcement from a family friend (CE p. 193 has photo of the card.)

42 30 June and 8 July 1942, which is the first entry while in hiding. She tells "Kitty" all about the call-up notice and the move.
44 8 July 1942. (AFBD p. 65 has a color photo of the diary opened to pages 44-5. Online, see a zoomable image of a very good facsimilie of the first diary, including pages 44-5: USHMM online exhibit. Finally, CE p. 222 has photo of part of page 44: the photos and her comments on them.)

45 "Daddy's nicest photograph." Large proof photo, taken in 1939. (CE p. 225 has this photo. As mentioned above, AFBD p. 65 has a color photo of this page -- diary opened to pages 44-5. Online, see the zoomable images of a very good facsimilie of the first diary, including pages 44-5: USHMM online exhibit.)

(Side note: AFBD p. 60 has a photo of the humorous menu which Anne typed for Miep and Jan's dinner visit on 18 July 1942.)

46 Page left blank until 28 Sept 1942.
48 (There is a partial photo of this page online. Site down: 10 Sept 2003)
49 a Thursday in July 1942 (There is a photo of the bottom half of this page online. Site down: 10 Sept 2003)
54 1 Aug 1942. She pasted in some small photos of herself with comments. (CE p. 228 shows the photos and comments.)

62 21 Sept 1942. (CE p. 126 has photo of this page.)

65 22 Sept 1942. (There is a partial photo of this page online. Site down: 10 Sept 2003)
72 26 Sept 1942. (CE p. 127 has photo of this page.)

77 28 Sept 1942. Three notes.
78-9 These pages were taped together with brown tape. If they have notes on them, they are unknown (see note on p. 123 of The Critical Edition).
80 30 Sept 1942.
Anne stretched the use of the following several pages by taping extra pages in. (The order of page use is on a separate Web page to lessen clutter here.)
85 4, 5, 7 Oct 1942. Pasted sheet of paper on to stretch diary.
87 7 Oct 1942. Pasted sheet of paper on. Added comment on 22 Jan 1944, on page 87b.
91 15 and 18 Oct 1942. Pasted sheet of paper on. On 91b, she pasted four small, old photos of herself with comments. Added a note to 91b on 22 Jan 1944. (Photos of all three page sides are in CE p. 151-2 and 272.)
92 Mid-October 1942. Pasted in four small, old photos of herself and wrote comments about them on this page. (The best image is online and I have not had a chance to explore it yet: zoomable images of a very good facsimilie of the first diary, including pages 92-3: USHMM online exhibit. AFBD p. 64 has color photo of the diary opened to pages 92-3. Online, Getty Images archive has this pair of pages available for viewing (item JM3998). CE p. 281 has a photo of part of page 92.)
93 18 Oct 1942. Pasted sheet of paper (at top of page) on to stretch diary. Pasted one old photo of herself on p. 93 itself, with comments. Page 93a includes a drawing of her fantasy outfit. (See above for the photos of pages 92-3. CE p. 282-3 have photos of: the photo, comments, and the drawing. Perhaps there were four more old photos on p. 93a? CE p. 293 includes a section of a page marked off similarly, with comments, and a big 93 written on it. )
94 18 Oct 1942. Pasted sheet of paper on to stretch diary. Pasted four photos on page 94a (I infer). Apparently, page 94b was not used. Online, there is a zoomable image of pages 94-5 (well, from a very good facsimilie of the first diary) included in the USHMM exhibit. (Offline, CE p. 284 shows the photos Anne included.)
95 20 Oct 1942. Pasted sheet of paper on to stretch diary. Page 95a includes a 22 Jan 1944 note. Online, there is a zoomable image of pages 94-5 (well, from a very good facsimilie of the first diary) included in the USHMM exhibit. (Offline, CE p. 152 has a photo of the note.)
96 28 Oct 1942. Pasted small sheet of paper on top of page to stretch diary. (96a has some shorthand.) (AFBD p. 62 has a color photo of pages 96, 96a, and 97b [the diary opened]. CE p. 293 has a photo of page 96b.)
97 22 Oct 1942. Pasted sheet of paper on right side to stretch diary. (AFBD p. 62 has a color photo of the diary opened including page 97b.)
98 5 Nov 1942. Pasted sheet of paper on to stretch diary.
99 10 Nov 1942. Pasted another sheet in. The start of her 13 Nov 1942 entry is on p. 99 itself, but first she skipped this sheet itself to use page 101 for a second 10 Nov 1942 entry. (See also second note regarding the next page, p. 100.)
100 13 Nov 1942. After this entry (talk of Pfeffer's planned arrival), Anne stopped regularly using this diary. Also after this entry, she only writes letters to "Kitty" (though she may have written to other personalities in the second diary, which is missing).
It appears that part of this sheet was torn out for 5 Dec 1942 because the 5 Dec 1942 letter (and presumably about half of page 99) was found loose (see CE, p. 298).
101 10 Nov 1942.
102 22 Jan 1944. Includes a photo of her mother, Edith, at the top of the page. She has re-read this diary and comments on how she left these pages empty. (AFBD p. 74 has a color photo of the diary opened to pages 102-3. CE p. 304 shows the photo of Edith.)
103 22 Jan 1944, continued. Includes four old photos of herself at the top of the page. (AFBD p. 74 has a color photo of the diary opened to this page. CE p. 305 shows the photos.)
104-116 (A photo that used to be available seemed to show three extra blank pages stuck onto page 116. Nothing is noted as written on them.)
117 Undated. A page of shorthand. (CE p. 305 has a photo of this page. There appears to be a page stuck onto it but nothing is noted as written on it.)
118 2 May 1943. Pasted sheet of paper on to stretch diary. Only used page 118 plus the "a" side of the extra sheet.
120-1 (These two page sides left blank.)
122 Undated notes: comments on a photo that she pasted on this page and the outline of a code (CE p. 307). The Hidden Life of Otto Frank includes this photo (labelled #12).
