~ Anne Frank Diary Chronology ~

Calendar links are writing dates. The calendar links are to the information on the diary entry/entries for that date. This information consists of page numbers: where in the Critical Edition to read the entry/entries and where in Anne's diaries the original diary the entry/entries were. Often I included notes on the entry or date. When a calendar date link is italicized, Anne only wrote tales or essays on that date (on loose sheets of paper).

Notes

Anne and the others in hiding -- and their friends -- referred to the hiding place as the "secret annexe." In the notes, I use this term, or "S.A."

The a-b-c column is kind of useless. It regards the version:

a: a diary entry from a bound diary
b: a diary entry (or re-write) on loose sheet(s) of paper
c: the diary entry as it appeared in Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. A "c" never appears in the column. The "c" version is on the same pages as the source version ("a" and/or "b").

"C.E." is the Critical Edition book. The C.E. page numbers are for the the English language edition (at least). The book doesn't always put the entries in date order, so these tables can be useful if you plan to read the original diary entries in order.

"Tales" in the notes column means the page in the book, Tales from the Secret Annex.

The diaries and loose sheet pages (LS) were numbered by someone somewhere along the line and I included these page numbers when they're known. Of course, the diary is noted as well.

"1" is diary one, etc., but the second diary is missing, so no entries are marked "2" as it's not available. "T" refers to the few tales/essays the Critical Edition includes.

Most entries not otherwise noted are to "Kitty" or "Kit."

I don't note every pasted-in entry or every entry with photos or other items in it. Go to the Page Use exploration for that. It is also useful for illustrations of the number of pages in each diary and their comparative sizes. Page numbering issues are also noted there.

Finally, a note about the missing diary: it's dates covered about: 7 Dec '42 to 22 Dec '43. Anne had finished the re-writes for this diary, so I think we basically have it. However, note that her tone is more mature and one can't quite believe she could go from writing to an assortment of imaginary friends suddenly to writing to only one diary personality ("Kitty"), and in a less childish manner. There is one original diary entry from this period (pasted into diary one: 2 May 1943). For more information about Anne's rewrite project, see Chronology of Anne's Re-writing her Diary for Publication.
