2002 Junior National Archery Championships

The target and clout events will be held at Victoria Park in the East Parklands, site of the 1987 World Archery Championships and numerous National and State Archery Events and Championships .

The venue is well known to the general Australian community, being used for a diverse range of events, including horseracing, the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix (from 1985 to 1995), the Australian 3-day Equestrian Event, the visit of the Pope in 1986, the World Veteran's Sevens (Rugby) Tournament, 1999 and since 1999, the Adelaide 500 - when the V8's strut their stuff.  (For the location refer to the maps below.)

Official practice will be conducted on Sunday, 13th January between 12:30pm and 4:00pm, following the Opening Ceremony.  The competition will commence on Monday, 14th January.

For the Australian Junior Teams Championships, names of up to ten team members and up to two officials must be forwarded to the Organising Committee no later than the end of the Official Practice session on 13th January, 2002.  Teams compete in target, field and clout events with the best four scores being counted for each event.

For the SmartPlay National Junior Target Championships, each recurve, compound or longbow archer will be required to shoot two rounds of 144 arrows.

Six arrows are shot each "end" and then scored and 6 ends (i.e. 36 arrows) are shot at each range (or distance).

The targets butts are aligned so that archers shoot from north to south and the target size is 122cm for the two longer distances and 80cm for the two shorter distances.

For the arbalists (crossbow shooters) the crossbows' round of an "IR900" each day consists of 90 bolts (not arrows) shot in 10 ends of 3 at each distance of 65m and 50m at a 60cm target and at 35m using a 40cm target in a "3-spot" format.

Shooting for all will commence at 8:30am.

The medals for the events will be awarded at the end of the second day's shooting.

The distances vary according to bow type and category.  The target is a 12 metres diameter area, which is indicated by a row of flags which can be seen from the shooting line.  The flags indicate the colours of the rings of the target; i.e. gold (10 & 9 scoring zones), red (8 & 7), blue (6 & 5), black (4 & 3) and white (2 & 1).  The centre of the clout target is indicated by a white triangular pennant called "the clout".

Scoring is carried out every end of six arrows using a cord which has the scoring zones marked on it.  It is secured at the centre of the target area and when scoring is simply drawn around the clout.  Arrows are scored according to the part of the cord which touches them.  Arrows are scored based on that part of the arrow shaft which first becomes visible out of the ground.  An arrow which is lying flat on the ground (usually due to bouncing off another arrow or hitting the clout) is scored based on where the point of the arrow lies.

Arrows which are stuck in the clout, score 10.

Archers will be entitled to two ends of three arrows practice before the first round and a single six arrow end of practice prior to the second.

Shooting for all will commence at 9:00am.

The medals for the events will be awarded at the end of the shoot.

The We're Smoke-free National Junior Field Championships will be held at Strathalbyn, home of Strathalbyn Target Archers and their beautiful but surprisingly deceptive course to the east of the Mt Lofty Ranges on the Friday and Saturday.  (For the location refer to the maps below.)
