How to do your Bit

In your home:

1. Recycle everything you can! Newspapers, tin cans, glass bottles and jars, aluminium foil, scrap metal, motor oil, etc.

2. For tasks which which you can easily do by hand try not to use electrical appliances.

3. Use cold water in the washer whenever possible.

4. Store food in re-usable containers, instead of cling-film and aluminium foil.

5. Save wire coat hangers and return them to the dry cleaners.

6. Donate unwanted clothes to a charitable organization.

7. Turn the heat down and wear layers of clothes.

8. Don't leave tap water running endlessly when it is not neccessary.

9. Always turn off the lights when you are out of a room.

In the garden

10. Start a compost heap.

11. Put up birdfeeders, birdhouses, and birdbaths.

12. Pull weeds instead of using herbicides which harm the environment.

13.Use only organic fertilisers. (They are still the best).

14. Compost your leaves and garden debris, or take them to a yard debris recycler. Burning them creates air pollution, and putting them out with the trash wastes landfill space.

At your office

15. Recycle all paper and use both sides of each sheet.

16. Hide throw-away cups, and train people to use their washable coffee mugs.

Personal efforts

17. Switch to a veggie diet. Raising animals for food consumes vast quantities of natural resources, including water, land, and oil; also destroying habitats and generates a tremendous amount of water and air pollution.

18. Don't buy products made from endangered animals.

19. Buy locally grown food and locally made products when possible.

20. Convert by example. Encourage family and friends to save resources too.

In an average waste bin there is:

Only 12% of our waste is recycled or composted. We can change this embarassing fact if we all work together to recycle a little more than we do now.

In Britain we recycle:

  • 1 out of 3 newspapers
  • 1 out of 3 glass bottles and jars
  • 1 out of 4 items of clothing
  • 1 out of 3 aluminium drinks cans
