Job Shadow Day

I job shadowed, Kristin Lucey, a defense attorney at a law firm in Orinda on February 06, 2001.

My day began early in the morning.  Since I have A period I woke up early like usual, therefore I did not have to wake up earlier.  I left the house around seven o’clock in the morning to arrive early at her office.  I was expected to be at her office around eight o’clock in the morning.  My mother dropped me off at her office.  When I arrived I entered her office and told her secretary who I was and why I was there.  She then called Kristin’s office and told her I was here.  The secretary led me to Kristin’s office.

When I saw her I introduced my self and she introduced herself and how she wanted me to call her, Kristin.  I was nervous to meet her but she was really nice and inviting.  After we introduced each other we sat down and she started telling me what she was doing.  First, she said she returned any calls from the previous day or any new calls. After she made the phone calls she then began to do paper work.  She showed me and let me see some of the type of paper work she does.  It was interesting and very long.  After that, like around ten o’clock, clients started coming in.  In order not to break the lawyer-client privilege she asked them if I could stay in the room.  If they agreed I could not repeat anything said in the room to anyone else.  Basically, the three clients she had before one o’clock said that I could stay.

Afterwards we went to lunch.  She treated me to lunch were she eats everyday with other lawyers from that firm.  There usually are only one or two lawyers in the office during lunch, when the rest come back those other one or two attorneys go to lunch. There is always a secretary there, usually there is two or three, maybe even more depending on which day it is.

After lunch was over, around two o’clock in the afternoon, she returned to the office and greeted more clients.  She had clients and paper work until four o’clock in the afternoon.  Since she makes her own hours she decides when to arrive and leave the office.  As long as all her work is done and everything is taken care of it is all right with her employer.  She said since she is not married or has children it is much easier to do her job. The reason is that she does not have to worry about other people.  Sometimes she says that she has to stay at the office until midnight because she has a trial the next day.  She has an average amount of trials amount and a lot of work goes into each trial. Unfortunately, the day I went she had no trial and it was a light days.  She has heavy and light days, usually heavy days.

The one thing she did tell me to remember is that I should become an attorney because I love it and not for the money.  The reason is because the money is not worth all the hours you must put in; she does it because she likes it she said.  I agree with her, no one should be in a job because of the money, because if you are not happy then the money is not worth it.
