What is your name and job title?

    Kristin Lucey, Associate Partner, Prosecuting Attorney.

How long have you been working in this career?

    6 years as an environmental attorney, and 2 years as prosecuting attorney for sexual harassment.

When you were in high school, did you know that this is what you wanted to do?

    No, at age 12 I wanted to be a writer, teacher, or an attorney.

How did you come to work in this field?

    I got interested in this career when a teacher mentioned it to me as a possible career in college.

Is a college degree, license, or a certificate required for this career? If so, what degree(s) or certificate(s) do you hold and where did you receive your training or education?

    Yes, you need a bachelor degree of Art, Science, or Language.  Undergraduate degree, and 3 years of law school.

Do you use a computer? If so, how?

    Yes, all the time.  I use it to type out drafts, informations(a paper that describes the charges on someone), I have my schedule in it, mostly secretary stuff.

Is a foreign language helpful/required for this position?

    Helpful, but not required.  However, you do receive extra pay for knowing a second language fluently.

Do you have a supervisor/manager overseeing your work? What kind of expectations does he/she have for you as an employee?  (Behavior, attendance, etc.)

    Yes, lets me do my own thing but expects me to be curteous to the clients.

What are your job duties?

    Type drafts, defend people who have problems at work, and welcome new clients.

What is a typical day on your job like?  Be specific.

    I get to the office around 7 o’clock in the morning.  I return any calls that I did not make the day before.  I type drafts out, go to meetings, get my paperwork together, and then around 2 o’clock in the afternoon go to some trial pending.  I get home around 6 o’clock.

What do you like the most about what you do?

    I get to help people who need help, who are in a bad situation and feel they can’t do anything about it.

What do you like least about your job?

    When things do not turn out right for the person I am representing.

Will you still be in this field five years from now? Why or why not?

    Yes, I love doing what I do.  I’m not in it for the money.

What is the outlook for this career? Will this job still be around in 5 to 10 years?  Will the job change over time?

    The outlook is good, attorneys will still be around for a long time.  People will always need attorneys.

How does your company advertise for new employees?

    In the newspaper, but also on the web now.

Would you recommend this career to other people?

    Yes, but do it because you like the career.

Is there a dress code? Are tattoos, nose-rings, or uniquely cut/colored hair permitted?

    No tattoos, nose-rings, or uniquely cut/colored hair are permitted.  You need to dress appropriate but no dress code is really set.

What is the average starting salary for starting employees?

    Around $30,000 dollars for a starting attorney.

Would you be willing to allow a student to job shadow you for one day? (If the answer is “yes” then ask, “Would you allow me to job shadow you on Groundhog Day, February 6th?”

    Yes.
