Getting Core Temperature with KP6-BS

Installing MAX1617A hardware monitor

by Derek Kwan

MAX1617 is now added successfully!

After a few hours of hacking effort.... finally I have get the MAX1617 installed and now it is working. AFAIK there are not that many motherboard will report CPU CORE temperature. Even using the optional sensor is not as close as making use of the diode on the CPU die. Anyways, to get you start going here is what I did. (Click pic to zoom in)

OK, here is what you need to do....
Step 1: Modify R65 & R118. (see the pics if u have no clue what I am talking about) Lift one end of the 4.7k (472) surface mount resister, these are the pull up registers for address pin. Lift the end closer to the slot, that is your 2.0V bus and try to mount them vertical.

Step 2: connect a small wire from LM75 VCC (3.3V) to R65 & R118 (to the end that is lifted up)

Step 3: the hardest part, solder your MAX 1617 to the pad EXCEPT pin 2 (Vcc). Lift that pin upward and make sure is NOT connecting or even touching the pad. Wire that pin w/ the 3.3V supply.

Step 4: double check the hack and make sure nothing get shorted.

Step 5: repeat Step 4.

Step 6: Cross your fingers and apply power.... and hopefully no fireworks....

Note: Optionally you can install C61 & C77 with 2200pF cap. (I didn't include that) This cap is use for filtering and will reduce the error (noise) from the remote sensor (Diode on the CPU die)

Note: You can also use LM84/MAX1617A/MAX1619 instead of MAX1617.

UPDATE Finally I have added a 2200pF cap for each MAX1617A.

Primary Slot 1 MAX1617A Secondary Slot 1 MAX1617A
