The family room is over the garage and used to house the laundry facilities. Those we moved to the basement because we knew the room had so much more potential. The floor was covered in gold/brown gawdy sheet linoleum, there were huge, ugly plywood doors covering access to the eaves and there were outlets on the ceiling! We replaced the rectangle, industrial-looking recessed lights with simpler, more residential ones, removed the outlets( and added new ones along the walls), textured the ceiling and carpeted the floor.

The built-in bookcases and storage areas behind the sofa as well as the wooded radiator cover are my design and construction. The walls are actually wallpaper with a pattern that looks like sponging - we just fell in love with it on first sight and knew it was perfect for the room. The carpet color was pulled directly from the wallpaper. The Roman shades are no-sew and cost under $15.00 to make. (The fabric is thin, blue stripes and is not as shear as the pictures infer). I think their simplicity provides the perfect accent.

This is our favorite room to relax in.  A place where you can stretch out and watch TV or movie.
