Startrax : Randy Travis

Real name: Randy Bruce Traywick

Birth date: May 4, 1959

Birthplace: Marshville, NC

Hair: brown

Eyes: blue

Height: 5 ft. 9 in.

Parents: Harold, a turkey farmer and construction company worker; and Bobbie, a textile worker

Siblings: brothers Ricky, Dennis and David; sisters Sue and Rose

Spouse: Elizabeth, married May 31, 1991; Randy calls her "Lib." They met when Randy, then 17, won a talent contest at a club she owned in Charlotte, NC. Lib offered him a job washing dishes and later became his manager.

Residences: Ashland, TN, Los Angeles and Maui, Hawaii

Pet: a palomino named Trigger, a descendant of Roy Rogers' horse

Personality: once a rebellious and troubled teen, Randy is now a modest, "aw-shucks" kind of guy; known for being extremely courteous and friendly to his fans

On his checkered past: "I guess all kids go through that stage of being a rebellious kid. I was just a little bit extreme...I didn't want to listen to anybody."

Early performances: received his first guitar at age 8; by 10, he had his own band, The Traywick Brothers, with older brother Ricky; by 14, the brothers were playing in a rowdy roadhouse that had a chain-link fence in front of the stage to protect the performers from the customers

Favorite food: home-cooked vegetables

Favorite colors: dark blue and green

Favorite country song: "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones

On spare time: "I lie out by the pool. Maybe ride a horse if I want to. Get up and get my workout done in the morning. Go out and have a nice meal. Maybe go and see a movie. There's not much to it."

Favorite movie: the 1989 TV mini-series Lonesome Dove starring Tommy Lee Jones, Robert Duvall and Danny Glover

Favorite actors: Clint Eastwood, Jon Voight, Robert Duvall

Favorite actresses: Sandra Bullock and Katharine Hepburn

Favorite hobbies: target practice, lifting weights, horseback riding, watching television

Dream destination: Africa

On breaking in: Randy was turned down by nearly every label in Nashville--often more than once. "I don't know why I didn't get discouraged--lack of sense or something."

Musical influences: "Merle Haggard, George Jones, Lefty Frizzell and Hank Williams Sr. have always been my favorites singers and always will be."

A few current favorites: Alan Jackson, Clint Black, Joe Diffie, Mark Chesnutt, Reba McEntire, Patty Loveless

On his music: "If I strayed too far from traditional country, I'd probably sound like a nut."

On his career: "What you've got to do is be thankful for what has come your way and enjoy it. I feel like I've been extremely blessed. I've had a career that's been wonderful."

Filmography: The Legend of O.B. Taggart (1994); Frank and Jesse (1994); At Risk (1994); Edie & Pen (1996); TNT (1997); The Shooter (1997); Boys Will Be Boys (1997); Fire Down Below (1997); Annabelle's Wish (1997); The Rainmaker (1997); Storm of the Heart (1998); Black Dog (1998); White River Kid (1999); Fortune Hunters (1999); Baby Geniuses (1999)
