The Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington, D.C. is a non profit (501 [c]3) organization of electric vehicle owners, hobbyists, educators and enthusiasts dedicated to promoting the use of electric vehicles (EV's) as an environmental and energy alternative. EVA/DC was formed in 1980 as a chapter of the nationwide Electric Auto Association (EAA), and holds regular monthly meetings, public displays, car shows and "tech" sessions to exchange information.
EVA/DC Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from 7:00-9:30 p.m. at various locations throughout the Washington area. Currently , the club meets at NIH Building 31 in Bethesda, Maryland. For information and directions to the next meeting, please contact Program Chairman Charlie Garlow or Dave Goldstein.
EVA/DC meetings are congenial and informal, appealing to a wide range of men and women, including EV owners and "do-it-yourself" automotive enthusiasts, high school and university racing teams, futurists and old car buffs, environmentalists and inventors, government and business leaders, professionals and tradespeople, students and educators, investors and entrepreneurs.
Many EVA/DC members do not own an EV, but attend meetings to learn more about the technology. Others, like EPA Attorney Charlie Garlow, have purchased or restored EV's built by small manufacturers, and now drive them in everyday commuting. A growing number of members - like husband and wife team Chip and Monica Gribben - have converted of built their own EV's from "scratch".
Currently, some eight-five EV's are known to be operating in the Baltimore-Washington Region, ranging in age from a 1903 Baker Electric to modern AC-and DC powered vans and pickup trucks operated by Virginia Power, PEPCO and Balitmore Gas and Electric Company. One of the first electric buses in the Washington area - powered by fuel cells - is undergoing tests at Georgetown University, and world championship solar and hybrid electric vehicles have been produced at George Washington University, and the University of Maryland and the U.S. Naval Academy.
EVA/DC actively supports these efforts, as well as local high school and elementary school EV competitions, where students gain valuable "hands on" experience in science, math and electronics, and learn that education and problem-solving can be fun.
For EV owners and enthusiasts, EVA/DC offers practical information and a vital link to a network of parts and service providers, and the pooled knowledge of those who have "been there, done that." Innovation - as well as safety - are encouraged.
EVA/DC EV owners are frequently called upon to display their cars at area schools, environmental fairs, automobile shows, parades and other public events. And it is not unusual for a local EV driver to be stopped in public by curious onlookers for "a peek under the hood": - often accompanied by a gathering crowd and an impromptu question and answer session.
With increasing environmental interest in the betnefits of EV's and concerns about escalating gasoline prices, club memebers are having a difficult time satisfying demand. But with major EV announcements appearing in the news virtually every day - including thelatest EV proudction plans from GM, Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Mercedes, Nissan , Toyota and VW - and with more EVkits, components and accessories available for schols, fleets and growing number of EV enthusaists, EVA/DC members are confident that many more EV's will be "joining the club" in the years ahead.
If you are interested in "joining the club" visit our "Becoming a Member" page and fill out an application.
