"A Love Before Time" from "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," music by Jorge Calandrelli and Tan Dun, lyrics by James Schamus
There has never been a film of such quality that will take your breath away. After viewing "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", you will immediately want to see it again. Set in ancient China, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is a heartfelt love story that is also a martial arts spectacular. The breathtaking fight sequences are choreographed by Yuen Wo-Ping, in which most Westerners will recognize his trademark kung-fu action sequences from 1999's The Matrix.
Based on a novel published before the Second World War by Wang Du Lu, the story opens as the legendary swordsman Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) travels to visit Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh). He's decided to give up his days as a warrior and he gives his sword, the Green Destiny to Shu Lien. She is to deliver it to the compound of a respected leader of the community, Sir Te (Lung Sihung). Duty and tradition have kept them apart from their true feelings of love for each other.
The legendary sword is eventually stolen by a masked figure, and Li Mu Bai & Shu Lien's frustrated romance becomes even more conflicted when they discover the secret of a young princess named Jen (Zhang Ziyi) and her lover Lo (Chang Chen). Jen is engaged to be married, but she clearly is a rebellious soul with a taste for adventure. Li Mu Bai tracks down Jen, which leads him to a deadly battle with his old adversary Jade Fox (Cheng Pei Pei), the woman who killed his master.
Director Ang Lee features three strong, well-developed female characters in his film, and these gals really know how to kick ass. Lee blends the ballet of martial arts with spectacular athletic dancing capabilities, which make the actors have a mix of both 'Superman' and 'Fred Astaire' abilities (Chow Yun-Fat IS Superman!!!). Lee also balances the timeless equation of honor, love, and sacrifice.
As for the martial arts sequences, they are dazzling and breathtaking, featuring a traditional "Wuxia" brand of fighting - the Wuxia were a class of warriors during the time of Confucius, who have magical abilities such as speed, flight, high leaps beyond the physics of gravity, quick reflexes, and superhuman strength.
A magnificently crafted hybrid of Chinese mystical martial arts and romantic tragedy, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is a film that defies the genre while embracing traditionalism. All of the picture's elements are so exhilarating to watch, which makes it one beautiful motion picture experience you don't want to miss.
