Ulic Qel-Droma

Once a student of Master Arca Jeth on the world of Onderon, Ulic Qel-Droma was a warrior and Jedi of the Republic. He was instrumental in the Beast Wars of Onderon, helping to stop the spirit of the Sith Lord Freedon Nadd from regaining his ancient power.

After Arca was killed in a surprise attack sent by the Sith magicians Satal and Aleema Keto from the Empress Teta System, Qel-Droma vowed to avenge the death of his master. Disregarding the advice of older Jedi, he set off to the Teta System to "conquer the dark side from within." As with many young and naive Jedi, Qel-Droma was instead seduced by the dark side and fell under the spell of Sith magic. Gaining a Sith amulet from Aleema, Qel-Droma was confronted by Exar Kun. In the midst of their duel, the two saw a vision of power from the ancient Dark Lords of the Sith, proclaiming Kun the Sith Lord and Qel-Droma the Sith Apprentice. Joining forces, the two fought to create a dark empire.

However, Ulic's friends did not give up hope of turning him back to the light side. After Ulic struck down his brother Cay, his former lover Nomi Sunrider used her powers to block him from feeling the Force. Finally realizing his mistake, Ulic betrayed Kun and led his light-side friends to Yavin IV, where Kun's corporeal body was destroyed.

Lord Exar Kun

Four thousand years before the Galactic Civil War, an ambitious young Jedi Knight under the tutelage of Master Vodo-Siosk Baas began delving into the mysteries of the Sith in his master's holocron. At first, Exar Kun was merely curious, anxious to learn more about Jedi history. This innocent curiosity soon turned into a full-fledged obsession, causing Kun to unleash his anger upon one of his fellow students and eventually his own master. Kun then left his master to pursue the Sith teachings of Freedon Nadd, whose followers had just been put down following the Freedon Nadd Uprising.

Nadd's followers led Kun to the Dxun moon where he found Nadd's spirit haunting the ruins of his tomb. Promising Kun great power, Nadd instead trapped Kun and then forced the young Jedi, broken and dying, to accept life through the Dark Side of the Force, thus severing Kun's grasp of the light side forever. Kun then left Nadd, heading for the moon of Yavin IV, where former Dark Lord of the Sith Naga Sadow had reigned, but found that Nadd had arrived ahead of him. Kun however refused Nadd's help and the dark side. The Massassi, Sadow's warped Sith followers, captured Kun and prepared to use their Sith magic to torture and kill him, but one of Sadow's Sith monsters broke free of its prison, attacking Kun. Kun then, through the Dark Side, wrenched Sadow's Sith amulet from the hands of the Massassi priest and used it to kill first the monster and then Nadd when he tried to interfere. Thus gaining the loyalty of the Massassi, Kun proceeded to erect huge temples on Yavin IV as bastions of Sith power.

Hearing that a Sith pretender had risen in the Sith citadel of Empress Teta, Kun and a few of his Massassi guards landed there with the purpose of killing this imposter. Instead, the so-called "pretender," Ulic Qel-Droma, engaged Kun in a duel. Both were master swordsmen and neither gained an advantage until the spirit of Marka Ragnos appeared to them, pronouncing Kun the Dark Lord of the Sith and Qel-Droma as Sith Apprentice, and proclaiming the rise of a new Sith Empire.

Counting himself, Qel-Droma, and his Massassi as practically invincible, Kun then proceeded to attack the Republic. Kun managed to gain the loyalty of his former fellow apprentice and enemy, Crado, and also gained a large following of Sith followers. Kun split his troops between himself and Qel-Droma, and launched what became known as the Sith War. Qel-Droma was captured once by the Republic, but Kun managed to storm the trial and rescue him. He also stormed the Jedi Republic stronghold, killing his own master in the process.

However, Exar Kun did not count on the one weak link in his plan-Ulic Qel-Droma. Confronted by his friends, Qel-Droma in his rage killed his brother and was stripped of his Force powers by Nomi Sunrider. To attone for his guilt, he led the Jedi to Kun's base of power on Yavin IV. However, though the Sith were destroyed, Kun kept himself alive by draining the life force from all the Massassi under his control. He remained trapped in the temples of Yavin for over 4,000 years while power passed from the Old Republic to the Empire and the Rebel Alliance established a base there. Though using the temples as a military base, the Alliance felt a strange darkness emanating from some of them and were hesitant to enter them.

This period of limbo was broken by the arrival of Luke Skywalker, who wanted to establish a Jedi Academy, or praxeum, on the moon. Kun began appearing to his students in visions, destroying one of them, Gantoris, and turning the strongest one, Kyp Durron, to the Dark Side. As a self-proclaimed Dark Lord of the Sith, Durron used his dark Force powers to wreak havoc among the Imperial fleets, and with the help of Exar Kun, almost killed Skywalker. Durron soon realized his shortcomings and Kun's lies, however, and returned to the Academy, combining with the other students to free Skywalker and destroy Kun once and for all with the light side of the Force. The power of the Sith had finally come to an end.
