BUSHONG FAMILY

It should be noted here that there is some controversy regarding the nationality of this family. Most descendants relate a common family belief that they are of French descent however others claim they must have been German as they arrived with German Immigrants inter married with German families and wrote and spoke German. The area where this family originated namely Alsace France has been governed by both Germany and France.   All materials on this page are my conclusions of the material I have found during my research the reader should verify any material with reliable sources.

Hans John Bushong was born in Alsace, Lorraine France in about 1692. He arrived in Philadelphia on 9/21/1731 aboard the ship Britannica. Accompanying him were his wife Barbara born about 1694, and his children  Magdalena born 1720, Hans Philip born 1722, Ana Barbara born 1725 and Christina born 1728. The family settled in Lancaster County where two more children were born John born 8/30/1732 and Jacob born 1735. Wife Barbara died in 1737, Hans John died between 1750-52. Some Descendants migrated to Shenandoah, Augusta and Rockingham Counties Virginia. This is where my genealogy centers. DEATH OF AGED CITIZENS"
After a week's illness of pneumonia, Mrs. Sarah Bushong died, rather unexpectedly at her home, near this place, on Tuesday, October 29, 1889 at 3:15 o'clock, P. M., aged 91 years, 11 months and 17 days. On Thursday at 11 o'clock, her remains were buried in the St. Matthews grave yard, the funeral services being conducted by Elder Samuel Myers, assisted by Rev. J. A. Snyder.
"Grand-Mother" Bushong was rather a remarkable woman, cheerful, vigorous, active, attending to domestic duties up to the time of her illness, and retaining her mental faculties to the time of her death. She was born in 1797, near the White House, Page County, Va., then a part of Shenandoah, married Jacob Bushong, March 5th, 1818, and on the 25th the bridal party came horseback to her present home, where she has since resided; is the mother of six children three dead a son and daughter living with her, and a son living in Nebraska. She leaves grand and great-grand children.
Her memory was remarkable, and she readily recalled all of the presidential elections from the time o f John Adams to the present date over 80 years and took considerable interest in them when this country was without railroads, telegraph, and other modern inventions, in fact, lived before their discovery. The people in her day lived a simple unassuming life, and underwent many trials and hardships for the advantages we now enjoy. She was a good woman, kind, generous, charitable to all, beloved and respected by her wide circle of friends and acquaintances who will feel a genuine sadness when they learned of departure.
Thus two of our oldest citizens other-Mr. John G. Coffman, born 2/23/1803 and died 10/28/1889} within a few days have passed away, a connecting link with the long-past and the present, by whose experiences we may profit."

ABRAHAM BUSHONG "Died, on the 21st inst. in this county, after a short illness, Abraham, son of Mr. Jacob Bushong, in the fourth year of his age. The doting parents of this promising child apprehending that its case was dangerous called in a medical gentleman immediately but in vain; for the disease proved inexorable, to the most skilled prescriptions of medicine; and thus the fond parents were robbed of the beloved object of their mutual care and solicitation. May their sorrows and afflictions be softened by those consoling words of the blessed Savior, "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of suc h is the kingdom of God."June 30, 1825

MR. FRANK BUSHONG DIES
"On Friday morning, April 29, 1927, at 7:30 o'clock, Mr. Frank J. Bushong, aged farmer of near New Market, died at his home half a mile north of town. For the past year he had been suffering from heart trouble, which continued to bring about his decline . Just two days before his death he was able to walk around the yard adjoining the house. Mr. Bushong was born in the old "Bushong House," famous in the annals of history as the center of the conflict which was waged between the Federal and Confederate troops on May 15, 1864 . His parents were the late Jacob and Sallie Strickler Bushong, originally citizens of Page County. Mr. Bushong was born on September 25, 1840, and was thus aged 86 yrs., 7 mos., and 4 days. Mr. Bushong's father was a man of advanced years when his death occurred in 1872 and his mother had reached the remarkable age of 93 years when she died in 1889. They were married in 1818. Mr. Bushong was the last of his immediate family. Preceding him in death were two sisters; Elizabeth, who died in March of 1907-and Caroline S. Bushong. He also had three brothers, Harrison, Abram, and Anderson. The death of the latter occurred in December of 1904. He is survived by a niece, Mrs. Mattie F. Good; a nephew, Mr. J. E. Bushong, and five great grandnieces, and one grand nephew. Until his death Mr. Bushong, together with Mr. M . D. Coffman of this town, were the only survivors of member of the Tenth Legion Artillery, which under Captain M. M. Sibert took part in the military operations incident upon the capture of John Brown at Harper's Ferry. Mr. Bushong went West just before the Civil War and spent a number of years farming in that region. Over thirty years ago he returned home and has since lived here. He was of retiring nature, honest and upright and possessed those qualities which characterize a useful member of the community. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock f rom St. Matthew's Lutheran Church of New Market, the Rev. J. T. Glick officiating, assisted b y Rev. T. A. Graves, pastor of St. Matthew's. Internment was made in the cemetery nearby. The pall bearers were Messrs. J. H. Garber, J. Frank Hupp, J. E. Kingan, A. S. Ruhl, W. J. Stir ewalt, and Joseph H. Zirkle. The flower girls were Misses Alice and Pearl Good."

DEATH OF MRS. BUSHONG. Mrs. Lydia Bushong, widow of the late Jackson Bushong, died at her home six miles south of Middletown about three o'clock last Saturday afternoon. She was about 83 years of age and for the past two months had been a great sufferer. The character of her illness was not well understood. In addition to the infirmities incident to old age, she suffered from lung trouble. Mrs. Bushong was the oldest of a family of eight children, three brothers and five sisters. Two of the brothers, Phillip and Andy Bushong, with the four sisters, Mrs. Homan, Mrs. Neese, Mrs. Hupp and Miss Kate Bushong survive her. Mrs. Bushong was a kind hearted Christian lady, a good neighbor and friend. She was esteemed by all who knew her and her death is sadly mourned by a large circle of friends. Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. John's church east of town and were conducted by Rev. J. Wesner. A large concourse of mourning friends and relatives followed the remains to their last resting place in the Miller cemetery.--Middletown News."

His funeral took place at Cedar Grove German Baptist Church, of which he was a faithful member, on Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock, Elder J. P. Zigler officiating. The pallbearers were Messrs. Abram and L . H. Zirkle, Samuel Garber, J. W. Newman, W. H. Olinger, and C. Shirley. The deceased was a son of Jacob Bushong, who served in the war of 1812, and died in 1872, and his wife, who was Miss Sallie Strickler, born in Page County Va., near the White House, and died near this place October 29, 1889, in the 93rd year of her age- they having been married in 1818. To them were born three sons, Harrison, May 25, 1819, dying unmarried; Abram died young, and Franklin J.; two sisters; Caroline S. dying young, and Elizabeth A. Bushong. She and her brother Franklin were living with their brother at the time of his death. Mr. Anderson Bushong was twice married; in 1857 to Miss Elizabeth Swartz; their children were William who died March 18, 1904; Sarah C., who married Mr. Frank Hupp, and died September 17, 1797; and Jacob E. , who married Miss Emma Rothgeb of near Luray and lives at the old home place. December 30 , 1875, he married Miss Delilah F. Bowen, by whom he is survived, their daughter, Mrs. Mattie F. Good, and besides the other relatives above mentioned, six grandchildren. Mr Bushong was a correct, honorable man, a good industrious citizen and his loss will be much felt. A mong the earliest colonial settlers were the two Bushong brothers who came from France to Pennsylvania. From them sprang a numerous progeny, which has done much in the building up and development of this country, and as a rule, a good honorable people. Mr. Harrison Bushong , a brother to the deceased, was quite a machinist and was among the very earliest inventors of a horse-power machine for "separating wheat from the head." Parts of one of these machi nes are still in the possession of Mr. Jacob E. Bushong near this place."
