Thursday, 14 Aug 03, we took the morning off to visit a couple of villages in the country. We visited the Ciuciui’s grandparents. She is 79, widowed and in good health, praise God. Here Ted and Danny are showing us the house and farm where their father grew up on. It seemed a bit much to visit their grandmother unannounced, with a group of 30 people! But Ted explained it was OK because they had no phone. |
All the water comes from the well with a counter balanced bucket. This well was not kept very clean. The water did not look inviting, |
Ted is talking with his grandmother. She is 79 years old and living by herself still. Note the beautiful grape vines over head. They seemed to grow everywhere. |
Sarah, Terri and Bekah are looking through a nice door treatment in the guesthouse. Embroidered linens framing the door. |
Homemade twig broom shown off by Josh Lamont. It looked very strong and durable. |
The outhouse facilities demonstrated by Dave Bradshaw. |
The Gourley sisters. There was a ladder leading to a hole in the roof. All three sisters climbed up and presented a nice photo opportunity. |
The Pentecostal church in town. A relatively new, nicely kept church. Note the lush green plants in the front. Even though the village was very small (I only recall seeing a few dozen houses) it had an orthodox Romanian church and a Catholic church. |
Inside the Pentecostal church. Note the large tile stove on the right and a nice (but old) sound system, speakers, mikes, and mixer/amplifier. |
This woman, a friend of the Ciuciuis, who was also caring for the plants outside the church, was kind enough to sing a song out of the hymnbook. It was a handwritten hymnbook and Ted choose the longest song in the book. It was about 10 pages long, and she sang all 10 pages. It was so long and she sang so sweetly that Ben Custalow fell asleep. After all that, we had to sing her a song! I can’t remember what we sang. |
We also visited the other grandparents, the parents of Zamfira. They were expecting us and made us a treat to eat. |
They made us the most marvelous doughnuts. Just as good as any doughnut shop in America, and plenty of them! We all ate till our stomachs hurt, some of us were eating to be polite, but I ate so much because the doughnuts were good! |
Ruth liked the doughnuts too, but I think she liked the fresh cool well water even better! Look at all those doughnuts left over! |
Christi Gourley and Ronnette Cooper. I loved the way the grape vines were trained to grow along the porch. And doesn’t the water look cool and refreshing? |
The whole family. They were very gracious hosts. I wish I had gotten all their names. |
Ruth by the well. So this is where that delicious water came from. Ruth is a water connoisseur, and was somewhat frustrated at the scarcity plain water in Romania. The bottled water sold in Romania is almost always carbonated. |
