FIRST GENERATION


1. John ARMITAGE(1) (2)(3) was born about 1787 in Ireland.(4) (2) He died on 25 Nov 1862 in Galen, Wayne Co, NY.(5) John Armitage was born in Ireland according to census information and the death certificate of his son James M. Armitage who died April 16, 1898, in Seneca Falls, NY. John bought property and a house 30 Sept. 1816, there was 140+ Acres on part of lots 97 & 98 in Galen, then Seneca County, NY.

In 1820 John Armitage appears for the first time in Seneca or Wayne county census information as the head of household. In this household there are three males under age 10, and one between age 26 and 45. There were only two females, one under age 10, and one between 16 and 26.

In 1830 there are the following males; one under age 5, one between 5 and 10, two between 10 and 15. There is one female between 30 and 40.

In 1833, March 22, John Armitage was one of three elected trustees of the Union Society of Methodist Episcopal Church of Tyre, NY.

1850 Galen Census John Armitage aged 62, wife fanny 50,B.Ireland, John B. 30, James M. 21, Benjamin 17, Thomas 13, b. ny, (Richard 69, Eliza 30, william 23, Phebe 17, Richard 15 ire)

No daughters are known, there may be one not surviving, reference the 1820 and 1830 census information. There were six sons, Joseph b.1818, John B. b.1820, William b.1821, James M. b.1828, Benjamin W. b.1833, and Thomas C. b.1837.

(In letter to family by Ella Belle Warrington Hughes she writes that her great grandfather was John Martin Armitage, he was a physician that carried a farm and business operations. This information is questionable.)


-Buried in the Traver Cemetery, Tyre, Seneca County, NY
-Headstone reads: "John Armitage died Nov. 25 1862 in the 75 year of his age, A quiet and peaceful Christian"

John and Frances Armitage Farm:
� The original house was built in about 1812, it still stands, square and straight, but in poor condition
� Current resident, Ellen Dinsmore, claims the house has 22 rooms, was a stage coach Inn, and had tennis courts
� Mailing address, 2305 Turnpike Rd. (a.k.a. Armitage Rd.) Tyre, NY 13148
� Situated on the Wayne and Seneca county line, 1/8 mile east of the Gravel road dead end at this road
� The house is 2.4 miles North of the Tyre Methodist Church, and less than 10 miles North of downtown Seneca Falls
� The original barn was taken down by a Tornado in 1947.
� There is a smoke house in the back yard, the roof has fallen in, the walls are near collapse
� The smoke house has a recess above the door for a plaque
� In the yard, � size headstone sized for the smoke house reads: "J. M. Armitage 1877"
� Note that the back of the same stone reads: "Maria Cornellia"
� Armitage bridge is in view from the side yard of the house
� The original house did not have a front porch, one was added by the Reed family (later owners)
� The front porch was removed by the Dinsmore family after the roof collapsed
� The fields are currently leased for farming purposes, 12/1996
Frances ARMITAGE(5) (1)(2) was born about 1797 in Ireland. She died on 30 Jul 1856 in Galen, Wayne Co, NY. Frances Armitage was born in Ireland according to census information and the death certificate of son James M. who died April 16, 1898 in Seneca Falls, NY. Frances or Fanny was the wife of John Armitage, and mother of six sons, see John Armitage information for the names of the sons.

Frances is buried next to her husband in Traver Cemetery, Tyre, Seneca County, NY. Her headstone reads: "Frances wife of John Armitage died July 30, 1856 in the 59 year of her age, Here rests a pious and most affectionate mother".

John ARMITAGE and Frances ARMITAGE had the following children:
