FOURTH GENERATION

Joseph Buntyn (1765-1826) and Elcy Everett (1773-1848)

As yet, Joseph Buntyn is known only from entries marking his birth and death in the Buntyn family bible, and through his wife Elcy Everett and their children. It seems likely that Joseph was related to the Buntin/Bunton family of Nash and Edgecombe Counties, North Carolina, but this cannot be proved at present. Regardless of his origins, he was born on September 1, 1765, and he married Elcy Everett (July 5, 1773-August 9, 1848), daughter of James and Edith Everett of Martin County, either in 1790 or as late as 1800 (if son Geraldus was by an unidentified first wife).

Based on the family bible, Joseph and Elcy Buntyn had children from at least 1801 through 1811, and family tradition and scattered bits of evidence indicate that they were living somewhere in South Carolina during this period. Elcy appeared as a witness in an Abbeville County will in 1816, and son James appeared in a Laurens County estate sale in 1826. Despite this tradition and evidence, however, Joseph's unmarried first son Geraldus entered military service in the War of 1812 at Raleigh, North Carolina (not far from the Nash/Edgecombe area) in April of 1814, mustering out at Charleston, South Carolina in August of 1815.

The family bible notes that Joseph Buntyn died on April 6, 1826, leaving Elcy a widow with a family of some 3 or 4 children (the two oldest sons had already married). By 1830, Elcy and son Benjamin had relocated to Pike County, Georgia, near her younger sister Eleanor's family. Just ten years later, Elcy lost her land to seizure by the sheriff (along with Benjamin several years earlier), and the family bible records her death on August 9, 1848, presumably in Pike County. No trace of her or Joseph's grave has yet been identified.
