Enoch Matthews was born about 1786 in Martin County, North Carolina, the son of Luke and Anna Matthews. About 1808 Enoch married Eleanor Everett (born January 7, 1791), daughter of James and Edith Everett of Martin County, and by 1820 the two had moved to Morgan County, Georgia. After the death of Eleanor's father in 1823, Enoch and "Ellen" Matthews sold their rights to one-seventh of the personal estate of James Everett in Edgecombe Co., N.C. on January 16, 1826. They subsequently moved to Pike Co., Ga. before 1830. Enoch Matthews died there in 1832 (just over 40 years old), where his will was bonded by his widow Eleanor, his eldest son Littleberry, and his son-in-law Joseph Buntyn, among others. Eleanor subsequently lived in Pike and eventually Henry Counties, where she raised their remaining children and several grandchildren. After moving with her unmarried daughter Martha back to Pike County to live next to her daughter Arrena and son-in-law Thomas Cook, Eleanor died there in 1862. Neither Enoch's nor Eleanor's grave has yet been identified.
