FIFTH GENERATION

Luke Matthews (c1755-1826) and Anna ______

The family origins of Luke Matthews are unknown at this time, although he appeared in Martin County, North Carolina as early as 1779, evidently shortly before his marriage to Anna _______ about 1783. He may have been the son of Revolutionary Soldier John Matthews, whose three years of service as a Corporal in Alderson's Company of the 5th North Carolina Regiment resulted in 640 acres of bounty land and 71 pounds, 2 shillings in pay, all of which was granted to one Luke Matthews as heir of John Matthews, who died intestate.

Purchasing 110 acres of land along Matthew Parker's Swamp in 1787, Luke and Anna Matthews spent the rest of their lives in Martin County, where they raised at least four children who survived to adulthood. Luke's will was recorded there on August 7, 1823, in which he mentioned his wife and children, as well as a total of eight slaves. The will was probated in July of 1831; neither grave has been identified.
