Vincent Family Stories

By Joyce Armstrong-Cooper

Here is the story of my husband's direct line back to Joseph VINCENT[Sr.]......

We start with a Joseph VINCENT Sr. who was born in 1748 or thereabouts. He and a brother, John came to America from Scotland around 1770. He married Rosanna POOLE and they lived in Greenbrier and Shenandoah Co. WVA. They had several children whose names and dates I have if anyone wants them. Some of them were also in Kanawha Co. WVA.

Joseph VINCENT Sr.'s son, Joseph Vincent Jr. married a Lucy JOPLING. The JOPLINGs were from Kanawha Co Va. (For more information on the Jopling family, please check the Jopling Page.) Some of Joseph VINCENT's children and siblings came to the west coast on wagon trains on the Oregon Trail, and the immigrant trains.

Joseph Jr.'s son, John Sidney VINCENT, also came west with his wife, Matilda MOORE.(Please see the Moore page on this site, for more information about the Moore family.) They settled in New Pinecreek, area of CA/Oregon. Other family settled in Sam's Creek, Antioch Oregon area, as well as Medford Oregon and on up to Walla Walla Washington, and points north. Others came on to California. We were fortunate enough to visit the New Pine Creek Cemetery last year, and again this year [1998], where alot of the VINCENT, HAMMERSLY, LAWSON, COOPER families are buried. Other family cemeteries are located at Sam's Valley, Oregon. They are the Antioch and Pankey Cemetaries, which we also visited this year. [1998]. We also visited the IOOF Cemetery in Central Point, Oregon this August [1998] and found some family members buried there.(Please refer back to the cemetery information on this site, for more family burials.)

John Sidney's son,Oliver married Mary Ann MEYERS and had a large family. There are interesting stories about them, in the Big Vincent Book We found their graves in the Antioch Cemetaries in June 1998.

Oliver's son, Charles Oliver VINCENT married Lavinia Jane GORDON. They are buried in New Pine Creek Cemetery, which is just over the Oregon border.

Their son Oatman VINCENT married Violet MCCUNE and lived in the New Pine Creek area, til they moved to Redding, Ca. They eventually moved back to New Pine Creek area and they are buried there. Their daughter, Geneva VINCENT married Albert COOPER. Her sister, Gladys married his brother, James COOPER, who is also buried in New Pine Creek Cemetery.

Geneva VINCENT and Albert COOPER are the parents of my husband, William A. COOPER.
