This information was written by Gladys VINCENT, daughter of Oatman Oliver VINCENT. It was found in the 1986 Update version of the VINCENT BOOK, which is in my possession. I have reworded and edited it for clarity. [Joyce Armstrong-Cooper]
Geneva Vincent's father [my husband's grandfather], was Oatman Oliver Vincent. He was born in Moonville, Jackson Co. Oregon in 1888. When he was ten years old, the family moved to Goose Lake Valley. He was to spend young manhood in the area of Willow Ranch, near New Pine Creek. He quit school at a young age, working on ranches, doing logging, and driving freight teams.
He and his father were in the freight hauling business. When his father died; Oatman took over his father's team and his brother, Uriah, quit school, to drive the other team. This partnership lasted a year and then they sold the business. Oatman went to logging with a John Henderson. Oatman married John's daughter, Della Henderson. She died, less than a year after they were married. After that, he worked at various jobs and was again logging, when he met Violet McCune, in 1919.
Gladys's article goes on to say that the family ranched around Davis Creek and Joseph Creek north of Alturas, Ca. until 1926. At that they packed all their belongings in a model T. Ford, and They moved to Lenz, Oregon, north of Klamath Falls. Oatman worked for the railroad there and retired from that at age 65.
According to Gladys also, they moved around alot, especially in the depression, finally ending up in Redding, Ca. A few years later, after Oatman retired; they moved back home to New Pine Creek.
He died in 1966 and is buried in New Pine Creek.
CHARLES O.VINCENT
Charles Oliver Vincent was born in 1861 in Scotland Co., Missouri. He died 1908 in Oregon and is buried in New Pine Creek Cemetary. He married Lavinia Jane Gordon in 1886 in Oregon. She was born in 1866 and died 1959 in Oregon and is also buried in New Pine Creek Cemetery. He worked in the freight hauling business together with his sons, Oatman and Uriah.
OLIVER [ORLANDA] VINCENT
Oliver Vincent was born in 1831 in Kanawha County, VA/WVA. He came west about 1849, during the California gold rush. He started to Oregon in response for white men to fight in the Indian uprising; but turned back when word was received that the war was settled. He went back to Missouri with gold bars to divide with his brothers. On 13 June 1860, he married Mary Ann Myers in Missouri. Their first son, Charles Oliver was born in Scotland County, Mo. In 1864, they started their move West. Their one year old daughter that was born in Iowa, died on the Oregon Trail and is buried along the Platte River. Their second son was born at Umatilla, Oregon in 1865 and the second daughter was born at Linn County in 1867. They both died with measles in 1869 and are buried at Antioch Cemetary in Jackson County, Oregon. The last baby lived only a year. Oliver was killed in a wagon accident in 1886, leaving Mary Ann with eight children to raise on their homestead at the base of the Upper Tablerock Mountain. Mary Ann died in 1925.
This information was in the 1986 Vincent update book. It is a composite of information taken from the Vincent Family History Book, along with additional records and personal conversation with family members.
JOHN SIDNEY VINCENT FAMILY
John Sidney Vincent was the son of Joseph Vincent Jr. and Lucy Jopling of Virginia. On July 1828, he married Matilda Moore. They lived near the Coalesmouth Post Office in Kanawha County Va/WVA. It is said that John spoke with such a strong Scotch accent that he was scarcely understandable.
There were five sons born in Virginia, before they left for Iowa. They arrived in Lee County, Iowa, near the Missouri border about 1836. Their only daughter was born there. Two years later, they were in Scotland County, Missouri, where four more sons were born between 1841 and 1851.
The 1870 census of Jackson County, Oregon [now Lake County], shows John and Matilda living with their son, George, near New Pine Creek. Matilda died in 1875. The 1880 census lists John Sidney and his brother Josiah residing in the household of John's daughter Lucy Vincent [Vinson] Hammersley. It has been told that Josiah had six toes on both feet. John died in 1886 and the whole family is buried in New Pine Creek Cemetary, in Oregon.
