The colourful and comical Puffin is Wales' best known seabird and Skomer Island has the largest colony in southern Britain, though they used to be far more numerous. Since 1946 the Puffin population has dropped from 50,000 pairs to 6,000, and the situation is mirrored on neighbouring Skokholm island. Numbers have remained stable in recent years, but how will our Puffins fare in the future? Skomer and Skokholm are close to the southern edge of the Puffins' range - will global warming cause them to leave eventually? How is their winter food of plankton, and their summer fish diet, going to be affected? Will their breeding success change?
