THE WILDLIFE TRUST WEST WALES
YMDDIRIEDOLAETH BYWYD GWYLLT GORLLEWIN CYMRU

DID YOU KNOW?

The colourful and comical Puffin is Wales' best known seabird and Skomer Island has the largest colony in southern Britain, though they used to be far more numerous. Since 1946 the Puffin population has dropped from 50,000 pairs to 6,000, and the situation is mirrored on neighbouring Skokholm island.

Numbers have remained stable in recent years, but how will our Puffins fare in the future? Skomer and Skokholm are close to the southern edge of the Puffins' range - will global warming cause them to leave eventually? How is their winter food of plankton, and their summer fish diet, going to be affected? Will their breeding success change?

Skomer puffins are carefully monitored during the short time they are on the island. The Wildlife Trust West Wales employs a field assistant each summer who charts the fortunes of the Puffins.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

By becoming a Puffin Pal you will be supporting the research work carried out each year which enables more to be learned about the lives of Skomer Puffins. The results are published each autumn in the Puffin Pal Report, and by supporting this you will be making a real contribution to the conservation of these fabulous seabirds, whose Welsh name is actually Pal.

Please become a Puffin Pal today.
