The puffin ventures into the sea to go fishing. A puffin diving for fish is an amazing sight. They swim in much the same way as they fly, using their wings like paddles and shooting very fast to catch fish and sand eels.
The puffling is old enough for its first flight at about two months of age. It has never been outside the underground nest and its parents encourage it to emerge, leading it outside for the first time.
It is now the end of the summer, the winds are getting stronger and colder and the temperature is dropping. The adult puffins rise in a group and fly out to sea, waiting for the pufflings to join them. Once the pufflings have made it from land to sea the adults have no reason to remain and disperse for the winter. The puffling is on its own.
The puffling stands uncertainly on the cliff about to make its first journey. It must learn to fish and dive very quickly or it will starve and die. If it survives, it will come back to this island in the spring to meet its colony and when it is about 5 years old it will find a mate and have its own puffling.
