Challenge de Fer Excalibur 1998

The Challenge de Fer Excalibur:

This will be the fourth annual edition of our "Challenge der Fer" tournament. In its first year of existence we held it as a two day tournament, with Day One devoted to an individual tournament in five weapons and Day Two as a five person multi-weapon team relay tournament. We created a "Randomizer Tableau" that the fencers could use to determine the weapon order, and luckily enough, some of us still kept our 20-sided dice from earlier lifetimes. Fencers would roll the die in order to create a unique bout order prior to each team match. It was a lot of fun!

We also introduced another key element of this competition - The Special Team Event. We held a five-person team scavenger hunt that mixed up people from different weapons and different clubs and put them on new teams. People were running around all over the place and creating things whenever they could not find the "real thing". In other years, the participants tried to creatively cheat as much as possible (read Phil, Adam, Corinne, Michael, Meghan, Don and Sherraine to name but a few) but this year, strict security measures have been taken and we feel confident that the "Special Team Event" will remain a mystery until the day of the tournament.

Every year since then we have held similar events, although we now have a three-person team format, with point handicaps (see the F.A.Q.). We still have a Special Team event, although for this year anyway, the individual competition has been dropped.

Here are a few details on this year's tournament:
