Q: What is a multi-weapon team relay event?

A: It is a style of fencing competition that consists of groups of three fencers on each team, each fencing a different weapon, and competing against their opponents in a randomized order. Each team will consist of three fencers: one foilist, one epeeist and one sabreur.

Q: How does the format work?

A: This depends on how many teams are entered, but if it what is expected (about 16 teams) the teams will be ranked and placed in to two pools of eight. They will fence all teams in their pool and then be placed against their opposite team from the other pool (i.e. #1 from Pool A will fence against #8 from Pool B, #2 from Pool A will fence against #7 from Pool B, and so on).

The order of weapons will be randomized before each team match, with the two team captains rolling a six-sided die and referring to a table on the pool sheet. It is important for the team captains to identify their fencers to the other captain and let him/her know exactly which weapon each fencer will compete in before the die is rolled.

Q: Will I fence more than one weapon?

A: No. That is not the style of this particular type of fencing tournament. You will fence only your weapon against only one person on the other team, the person who is similarly competing in your weapon.

Q: What is this I hear about a "Special Team Event"?

A: There will be a five-person Special Team Event that has nothing to do with fencing after the multi-weapon team relay competition is over. In the past we have had adventurous Scavenger Hunts, fanatical Car and Card Chases, and snowball fights in front of Wooly Mammoths. This year will be along the same vein as past years special events, but the exact format will not be announced until all fencing is concluded.

Here are a few rules and hints: Only one car is allowed, and the maximum number of people on each team is FIVE. You will make up the teams on your own, but try to pick someone who is creative and preferably musically inclined. Cell phones will come in handy, as will access to a good computer that has easy access to the internet. Bring a backpack.

Q: What's up with the Christmas party?

A: The Special Team Event will end up at the latest Excalibur Animal House, the home of Evan, Mark and Serge. The address is 414 Nelson Street in the Sandy Hill section of Ottawa. All participants at the Challege de Fer are invited. Bring a $5 wrapped Christmas present for our fun gift exchange, and it would be nice if you could bring something for people to eat or drink as well. Be creative - call one of the guys for some ideas. They can be reached at 565-2225.

Q: Who else will be there?

A: Lots of people from the four national capital area clubs, and perhaps a few more fencers from Kingston, Toronto or Montreal. You will have to get there to find out who made it out this year!

Q: Where is the competition being held? How do I get there?

A:

Q: Are there any prizes?

A: There are always some fun prizes at our Challenge de Fer tournaments, but we don't give out bones any more to the 2nd place team. There are prizes for the first place team and theme prizes for other teams or individuals who expressed their enthusiasm or team spirit in certain special ways. It helps to have a creative team name and cheer!

Q: Can I help out with anything?

A: We have most bases covered, but would appreciate it if you could bring some sort of creative theme-prize (which you can bestow on the "lucky" recipient). We will be doing some tournament setup on Friday night at 6:00, so if you can make it out to the salle, we would appreciate your help. Contact Don directly at 744-6262 or by e-mail at [email protected].
