RECONSTRUCTION AMERICA AND BEYOND

With the end of the Civil War came freedom in America. And for a short while it seemed as if the recently freed Africans would share an equal status with their former masters. As one author put it, "There had never been an age like this one before and there would never be one again." But these hopes were quickly dashed in the storm of Black Codes, Jim Crow, and violence of the New South. It was out of this pressure that Black politics would find a foundation.
