When one hears the word "athletics" in conjunction with Grambling State University, the legendary Coach Eddie Robinson and his football career automatically comes to mind. Grambling State University's Athletic Department consists of various athletic programs. However, in keeping with the traditional reference to GSU Athletics, we will begin the introduction to Grambling State University's Athletic Department with a brief history of Coach Robinson and his legendary football career at GSU. If you would like a more in depth look at Coach Rob and his career, please see Coach Eddie Robinson Sr.'s Profile
The 1997 football season was a very special one for Grambling State University, the state of Louisiana, this country and the world; for it was then that Coach Eddie Robinson, Sr., the Legend, took his final bow. This season marked the culmination of a spectacular 57-year career that has seen "Coach Rob" (as he is fondly called by most) march to the forefront as the winningest coach in the history of college football. The highly-acclaimed coaching icon's winning has extended beyond the parameters of the football field and into the lives and hearts of hundreds of student athletes.
Perhaps Joe Paterno, himself a legend as coach at Penn State, succinctly summarized Robinson's career when at the 1991 annual National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Award Dinner, he said "Eddie Robinson is one of my personal heroes. Nobody has ever done or ever will do what Eddie has done for this game. Our profession will never, ever be able to repay Eddie Robinson for what he has done for our country and the sport of football."
Coach Robinson has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Of course, it was an honor; however, it was merely an inkling of the impact Mr. Eddie G. Robinson, Sr. brought to the table. And perhaps, his successor as Grambling State University's head football coach said it best, "...you take someone like Coach Rob and take his shoes and bronze them...". And, in doing so, you keep the legend alive.
