As Grambling State University's man for all seasons (and reasons), Wilbert Ellis has long been a cornerstone in GSU's tradition of excellence. When someone was needed in the Fall of 1996 to take the reigns of the GSU athletic department, Ellis answered the call and took on the added responsibilities of Interim Athletic Director until a search for a new A.D. could be properly conducted. For 36 years, Ellis has been a guiding force in the Grambling State Athletic Department, along with Head Football Coach/Assistant Vice President for University Relations Eddie Robinson and Assistant to the President for Athletic Affairs and former Athletic Director and men's basketball coach Fred Hobdy. The Ruston, Louisiana native was appointed Assistant A.D. at GSU in August of 1989 and served as interim Athletic Director from September 1996 - January 1997. Ellis received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Grambling in 1959 and later earned his master's degree from Kansas State University.
