Our Lady of Walsingham - Welcome

candle
Welcome to the Our Lady of Walsingham page, devoted to and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the replica of the Holy House of Nazareth that it contains. Herein you will find some links to various sites containing information on the Anglican and Roman Catholic National Shrines as well as my own interpretation of this Holy Place. Think of this as sacred space, ad soli gloriam deo and you will not be wrong. The purpose of this or any other Marian Shrine or devotion IS NOT to detract or take away from the honor and worship due Godas our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier; but rather, to lead the worshipper more fully into the life of Christ following the example of Mary and all the Saints.

Please note that this is not an official organ of the Anglican National Shrine, nor is it sponsored by the Guardians of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. This page is maintained privately by a devotee of Our Lady of Walsingham. The Shrine itself is organically connected to the Church of England; though it resides physically in the Diocese of Norwich it is under the independent jurisdiction and oversight of the College of Guardians of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, and belongs to the entire Anglican Communion and the wider Body of Christ as a whole. For more information, you can contact the Shrine Office at:

I should like to reiterate at this point that this page is my personal interpretation of Walsingham, and not an official website of either the Anglican or Roman Catholic National Shrine.

NEW I am proud to annouce that both the Roman Catholic and the Anglican (Church of England) Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham now have an official Internet prescence through a joint venture! You can go to it here!

WHO IS OUR LADY OF WALSINGHAM?
Our Lady of Walsingham is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the medieval period because of her visitation to Lady Richeldis de Faverches of Walsingham Manor in Walsingham Parva (in Norfolk) in 1061, who was commanded by Mary to build a replica there of the Holy House of Nazareth. The Shrine is in the village of Little Walsingham between King's Lynn and Norwich, Norfolk.

The Shrine, a simple wooden house later encased within a stone church, became a popular source of pilgrimage in the medieval ages, earning the title England's Nazareth , because of the replica of the Holy House that it contained. It is an appropriate title for the Shrine, because during the Middle Ages, England itself was known as "Mary's Dowry" because of the extent and seriousness of Marian devotion there. It was the most famous Shrine after Thomas Becket and attracted many kings and queens in its time. It was destroyed, and its famous Image burned, during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the English Reformation under Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell.

The story of the Shrines revival begins in 1921 and the installment of Fr. Alfred Hope Patten as Vicar of Walsingham. Having a great devotion to Our Lady, he set up a new Image, based on the old Priory seal in the British Museum at the Parish Church of St. Mary's Little Walsingham, and brought the first pilgrimage since the Dissolution to Walsingham in 1922. Previous to this, the Roman Catholic Guild of Our Lady of Ransom had restored pilgrimage to the Slipper Chapel in 1897, thanks in part to the efforts of Miss Charlotte Boyd, an Anglican convert to Catholicism. The present Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham dates from 1931, when on October 15, the Image was translated to the newly built Shrine Church. Since then, Pilgrims have come in ever increasing numbers to the Shrine to pray at the feet of Our Lady, and today the Shrine continues to witness to the Incarnation of Our Lord .

Though it is considered a local shrine because of its connection to Walsingham, it has a global ministry, and devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham has spread where-ever the Anglican Communion exists, including such far-flung places as Australia, Canada, and Nevada.

The time I spent at Walsingham over Easter and during the Centenary Pilgrimage (1997)as well as my further visits have become very important to my faith journey. Through it I recovered a bit of my Catholic heritage as an Anglican and experienced the deep love that the Church Universal has ever had for the Mother of God.

I want to share that love, which is why I made this page.

Antiphon of Our Lady

From the beginning of Advent to the Feast of the Purification, February 2

Alma Redemptoris

Gracious Mother of our Redeemer, for ever abiding.
Heaven's gateway and star of ocean, O succour the people,
Who though falling, strive to rise again.
Thou maiden who barest thy holy Creator, to the wonder of all nature:
Ever Virgin, after, as before thou receivest that Ave
From Gabnriel, have compassion on us sinners.

V. After Childbearing, O Virgin, thou didst remain inviolate.
R. Intercede for us, O Mother of God

Let us pray.

A lmighty and everlasting God, Who by the fruitful virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, has bestowed upon man the reward of eternal salvation: grant, we beseech Thee, that we may know the help of her intercession, through whom we have been accounted worthy to receieve the Author of our Life, Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord. Amen.

This site is a labor of love and a commitment to prayer. As such, it is a work in progress, which means that I am always looking to improve my site and increase its effectiveness, not necessarily to make it larger, yet always with an eye to furthering the glory of God, which is its soul purpose. Any errors (spelling or otherwise) that I find I will correct, and I welcome any suggestions from you. Thank you for you patience, and may God bless you and Our Lady look favorably upon you wherever you are.

I hope you enjoy your visit and that you will keep Walsingham and the work of the Shrine in your prayers.
May the prayers of the most pure Mother of God, Our Lady of Walsingham be with us.
