NF period A Events preceding the fall of the Thallonian Empire. |
What is "New Frontier"? New Frontier is a Star Trek book series launched in 1997. The central character is Mackenzie Calhoun, who in his teens lead a revolt to free his native planet Xenex from the grip of ruthless oppressors. Recruited into Starfleet by Jean-Luc Picard (at the time, captain of the Stargazer), his career path and past have been decidedly checkered. But now he has been given command of the starship Excalibur, with orders to patrol the disintegrating Thallonian empire and render whatever aid he can to the striken inhabitants of the troubled sector.
Mackenzie Calhoun is a vivid but somewhat dark character with a scarred face, purple eyes, and an ability to sense upcoming danger. His first officer is a very familiar figure: Cmdr. Elizabeth Shelby, "expert" on the Borg and fierce rival to Will Riker. She is also Mackenzie's former fiancee. On board as well is Si Cwan, a prince of the fallen empire, who is trying to come to terms with his vastly changed circumstances while searching desperately for his young sister, whom he prays is still alive.
Supporting Mackenzie in his mission is a diverse, and sometimes divisive crew, who are not at all sure what to make of their mysterious new captain. Among them: Lt. Cmdr. Selar, Vulcan Chief Medical Officer, formerly of the Enterprise-D; Lt. Cmdr. Burgoyne 172, Hermat Chief Engineer; Lt. Zak Kebron, Brikar Security Chief; Lt. Robin Lefler, half-Human Ops officer and former girl-friend of Wesley Crusher; Lt. Mark McHenry, Human Navigation officer; and Lt. Soleta, the half-Vulcan / half-Romulan Science officer who is desperate to keep her mixed heritage a secret. But as the old saying goes, secrets have a way of coming out...
