Byers looks like a professor who has wandered into a CIA rendezvous by mistake. He is the Lone Gunmen´s military and information systems expert, and with his beard and dapper shits he seems out of place among his grungier colleagues. But his no-nonsense demeanor and sharp mind attests to an encyclopedic knowledge of current speculation on everything from the Kennedy assassinationto the latest in DNA research, and conspiracy theory. Byers unerrigly recognizes and describes the bizzare recombivant chemistry that lies at the heart of Agent Scully´s disease in "One Breath", and quietly expresses sympathy to Mulder. Occasionly he indulges with a wit as sardonic as Mulder´s, as when he tells him "that´s why we like you Mulder. Your ideas are weirder than ours". He is the least liable to crack a joke or even a smile unlike co-conspirators Langly and Frohike. However, his intelligence lends authority and believability to the unlike trio´s offices.
