General Info - police service is provided by TX Dept of Public Safety Highway Patrol Troopers, TX State Rangers (for specialized crimes), County Sheriff Departments, City PDs, and Village PDs. There are no merged-city PDs that I know of. Fire service is provided by VFDs, City FDs, and Village FDs. There are no County FDs that I know of. There are many industrial FDs in Texas because there are many large industrial plants (especially in the Houston, Chorpus Christi, Brazoria County, and Beaumont areas. Ambulance service is provided by City FDs, City EMS, private ambulances, and colunteer ambulances. There are no County Ambulances that I know of. Texas State Forestry covers the eastern forested part of the state primarily - until the prairies of West TX start burning. Most 911 Comm Centers are located at County Sheriffs Offices. Surburban areas generally are served by regional or local comm centers (Tarrant County + Harris County + Dallas County + Bexar County + Travis County)

July 2001 - see the Double Oak FD website for good info on their comms procedures. Essentially - all dispatch comes from the County dispatcher via 155.835. Then response occurs on the TRS, with Ch1 being used to talk to the County Dispatcher, and local FD TGs used for other response related radio traffic.
For HT callsigns see 45peter/htcallsigns.html - is Firefighter 529 to Captain 530 or Engine 521A + Engine 521B etc.
On page-outs, the dispatcher only pages out on the 155.8350 frequency...they have the ability to simulcast but they don't ever do it unless an agency with VHF only capability needs to talk to an 800 MHz agency. The NPSPAC freqs. are in a separate bank of the radios...we also have surrounding cities frequencies programmed in seperate banks so we can usually talk to everyone we need to.

Fire - pageouts still heard via 154.19 and 155.04 (The Woodlands). Apparently changes are under way with the VHF repeaters. I guess that Conroe uses 800TRS - all of the other FDs must be on VHF still. Possibly the Sheriff and County EMS are on the County 800Mhz TRS. (May 2001 on HoustonScan list)

February 2001 from www.dispatchnews.net - After much work and debate, Austin (Tex.) has awarded a $61.2 million contract to Motorola for a regional 800 MHz ASTRO SmartZone trunked radio system capable of operating in both digital and analog modes to serve public safety and public service agencies in Austin and surrounding Travis County. The huge 17-site, 80-frequency system was put together by the 9-1-1 Radio, Dispatch, Mobile Data, Transportation Coalition, which had representatives from all participating agencies. They anticipate 8,500 initial radio users, with planned growth to some 12,000 users. Future users may include the Capital Metropolitan Transit Authority, the University of Texas, the Austin Independent School District, the Texas House of Representatives, the Texas Legislative Council, and the cities of Westlake Hills and Pflugerville. Harrison Corp. will supply a microwave backbone for the system, and the entire sha-bang should be operational by the fall of 2003.
