Born Jan. 7, 1903, in Toronto, Reginald (Hooley) Smith played his
amateur hockey in that city and was a standout member of the
Granites team that won the Olympic hockey championship for Canada
in 1924. He turned professional the following year with Ottawa of
the National Hockey League, playing right wing, and it was here
that he developed a sweeping hook-check that made him a formidable
two-way player.
The Senators won the Stanley Cup in 1926-27, but Smith encountered
personal problems in the final against Boston. Always a fiery
player, he attacked Harry Oliver and the penalty was a one-month
suspension by League president Frank Calder, effective at the start
of the next season. Ottawa dealt the 5-foot-10, 160-pounder to the
Montreal Maroons before that next season, and once again his team
was in the Cup final, although they lost to the Rangers. It was
with the Maroons that Smith combined with Nels Stewart and Babe
Siebert to form the great "S" line, a trio combining great scoring
power with aggresssive play, and it was with this team that he
played on his second Stanley Cup team, in 1934-35. Smith, captain
of the team, was voted All-Star centre the next year. HIs only
previous All-Star recognngnition came in 1931-32 when he was voted
to the second team.
Smith was traded to Boston in 1936-37 and after one season joined
New York Americans, where he completed his career with his 200th
goal in 1940-41. His best individual scoring seasons were 1929-
1930 (21 goals) and 1932-33 (20 goals). In his final years in the
NHL, Smith spent some time playing defense. Upon retirement, he
took up residence in Montreal, where he died Aug. 24, 1963.
